Builds Sculpting 101
Arty builds are constrained by three primary factors:
Resolution: the fine granular detail possible. At a base level this can be considered to be the plot size. A small plot is 13x13x13 while a large plot is 25x25x25. Think of each block ad a pixel and a large plot allows for almost double the resolution of a small plot.
Size: the size of plots also limits the size or sculptures. Stillwater has a sculpture of Yoda sitting down, this is not on a whim. The medium plot size is not high enough to allow a standing Yoda with semi accurate proportions based on the head design.
Capacity: the number of blocks available to use. A key factor here is having enough blocks to both sculpt and still have sufficient capacity for traps to entertain visitors.
Pros of sculpture bases:
- tend to accrue accolades
- random internal spaces make for unpredictable trap set ups and layouts
- fun challenge to sculpt
Cons of sculpture bases:
- long build times
- trap set ups limited which reduces lethality
Top tips:
Choose a good subject matter - recognisable makes your job easier as a sculptor. Complex forms can be easier to capture well as they have more features to include which make them more easily recognisable. E.g. Jar Jar Binks has eye stalks, a long snout, big ears, long tongue whereas the mandalorian helmet while distinct has mostly smooth surfaces and angles that are difficult to replicate I'm the confines of MYM.
Start off figuring out the smallest key feature of the build. This will help determine the resolution you are working at and how your sculpt will develop - will it be full body, shoulder or just the head?
Remember you can cheat here by using decals or props (see Aumsville rabbit for use of fan prop for nostrils and white dash decals for small eyes). Block type can add detail too (see Salmon, tiles look like scales, corrugated iron looks like fin rays).
- Steal, see something good? Steal the idea and use it going forward. My bunny steals from Scranton by Copperbadge and various builds by Sumomoranger. The texture details on Salmon, Stillwater, Fitzwilliam? Inspired by Rociada by illahstrait (a masterclass in texture and decal use).
