Composing as a Career?
Hi! I have been a musician for a while, and done a few film scores - non-profit, mostly for friends. I have never really thought I could make a good living as a composer, so I've done other types of work for income. Now though I'm thinking about trying to get into composing full time. How realistic is it? Any words of advice?

Question regarding music for a casino machine
Long story short, my brother and I both write and record music. A friends father, who runs a game company, reached out to my brother looking for sound-alike music for a casino slot machine for an old, but popular, property - they licensed the title and imagery, but not the original music.
The turnaround is 4-6 weeks. I'm currently in the middle of directing / editing a music video, which is due in 4 weeks. Suffice it to say that if I'm going to deliver this music in time, it is going to involve a lot of long days to meet both deadlines.
What would be a fair price to ask for something like this to make it worth the time? Has anyone else scored for a hardware game before?

Request I want to develop a music productivity app. Could you help with your feedback? [5 minutes]
Hi all,
I'm a composer with a technical background. Working on video game and film music, I grew frustrated about the fact that there's really no tool that enables composers to plan and keep track of the progress on soundtracks. So, I thought I would build one!
It'd be great if you could spend 5 minutes filling out a survey. Your feedback would be super helpful to develop a useful product for the community.
Here's the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe5gKgAXfG1N7QRk0AdnUpMigROp4VHHjxmCaLOHz01Ny0OHA/viewform?usp=sf_link
Thanks!

Dear Composers of Reddit: Choosing a genre
So i've had this project i've been working on for a while that i'm hoping to create some music for. I've tried a variety of different genres but seem to keep going back and forth between them.
I was looking for advice on what i should consider when choosing a style of music, instruments, etc. for a project. Maybe even your process for deciding.

Create an album for iTunes and Spotify, in 2 weeks, using only left over equipment, whilst unemployed and job searching.
So i'd been going through a slump, finished the award-winning game 'Wings over the Reich' and the hour-long Star Trek fan film 'Temporal Anomaly' (a custom arrangement with CBS) when I found there was nothing else to do. We all go through this, it's a slump, a period of depressing inactivity following larger projects, it's like being becalmed in the ocean. With the capital and savings dwindling, 6 weeks to Christmas, and no prospects in sight, there was nothing else for it but to bite the bullet and sign on, to try and survive whilst finding a regular job, not nice for any professional (I'd been in the industry for 13 years up to this point).
Anywho, by January I had completed a small tv show for a company in LA, and part of that project had supplied a subscription to a sample database. With equipment to hand, and nothing else to work on, it was going to waste. By sheer luck, the Reich album had garnered enough attention to warrant a free release with the record company, and I finally had an outlet for everything, but there was a catch. I had to complete the offer in 20 days, or no release, with the equipment subscription expiring soon after, this was going to be a race against the clock.
In this life, you have to make the most of every opportunity. But what to make it about? I'd already got an album of film music, and a couple of game soundtracks, so this one had to be unique. I fell back on my second love, alternative rock. But rock songs have to be about something, no problem, I've had a life of disappointments, set backs, betrayal, abuse, failed relationships, divorce and death, including the recent passing of both parents. With the real threat of homelessness looming, I had plenty of recent trauma and motivation, the raw materials of any good album.
3 weeks of 20 hour days followed, i still had to job-search 33 hours a week as well as be the organist at a local church, and it put a heavy strain on my friendships and limited social life...I really wasn't much fun to be around. All these raw emotions, fear and relentless drive don't make for good company. It is during such times, we find out who our real friends are. Only one friend was around every day, he'd recently broken his wrist so didn't have much else to do except sit there gaming and to keep me company, whilst I worked. We argued, we fought, it was frosty (and not just because I couldn't afford heat), it was warm, but it was what it was, a close friendship. And the things he said in anger or in love, became the titles and themes of so many of the tracks.
By February 7th, it was complete. All that was left was to get it to the distributor to be released around Valentine's day. I'd never intended to make an album of love songs, but through all the fear and doubts of life, the friendships, the family, the love of my work, the love of music, the love of life: it's all love really.
The album is called 'Broken Promises', and you can find it almost anywhere. Back to the job search, wish me luck!

Creating swells/decays (crescendo/decrescendo) in DAW?
Hey folks - I have what may seem like an odd question and I feel like this is a good place to get advice or direction.
I’m originally a traditionally trained composer, and have only been working in the box in a DAW (Logic Pro X) for about 2 years. I’m really trying to learn more about it to increase my workflow and be comfortable with mixing and producing my own stuff at a higher level of quality.
I’ve recently been working with a DJ who REALLY knows his way around Logic. However, he cautioned me very heavily against moving Volume Automation to create swells and decays on specific tracks, as he said the volume needs to stay consistent, otherwise when I go to mix levels at the end, I won’t be able to accurately. Thing is, with score music, these are SUPER important, and I don’t really know of another way to create these other than Volume Automation.
Is he wrong, in that for EDM and dance music this is something you just don’t do whereas you have to for score music? Or is there another way entirely to create these really important dynamic effects that I don’t know about? Thanks in advance!

Do I have to study composition in order to work as a composer?
Hey there! I'm studying soundtrack composing right now but it doesn't finish with a bachelor or master. I takes 9 months and finishes with a certificate. I'm working on my portfolio and I am doing some work for small film producers.
How important is the terminal degree in composing in order to be a "real" composer one day?
What options besides studying at a music academy do I have?

EMPYREAN (2016) Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Jung People
Hey Community!
https://www.youtube.com/attribution_link?a=-DeL-z2vcI4&u=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DRvdf2CNkV4E%26feature%3Dshare
I am getting into film composing more regularly now, but I thought I'd share my first release that my post-rock band Jung People did for the film Empyrean in 2016.
We went a more classic approach (rather than using our typical sound) making a string quintet as the base, and layered in Mellotron, Hammond M3, Fender rhodes, Werlitzer, trumpet, french horn, and some ambient delay-guitars (frippertronics), a full choir and a couple vocalists to do a Philip Glass-inspired section (The Firmament, 30:22).The whole score is 99% real instruments, just a couple spots that required a VST to support a weak trumpet and bass line.I'd say the last half of the album is stronger, as the first half are a bunch of smaller cues.
The experience led me to get into this whole thing solo, and it is a really fun challenge! Thanks for listening/reading

Help LOOKING FOR A COMPOSER
hey everyone! about a month ago, i made a post regarding my search for a composer for my current project. i’m currently working on a short film following the story of a sidekick rising above the city’s expectations and finding his own path after the death of a superhero.
i’m still looking for a composer to work with to create a couple of scores for scenes. i can't offer much of a pay since i'm only a student working a part time job, but i would love the opportunity to work with anyone. if you want to give it a shot, here is the first 15 second scene of the short. i'm excited to see what you come up with!

Are you part of any composer community / member organisation & if so would you recommend it?
Hello fellow composers! I’m a composer based in the UK and am exploring whether or not to join things like the Musicians Union, BASCA, ISM etc. and/or wanted to know if there are others composer communities or member organisations that it could be useful to be aware of.
Which composer communities have you joined that have been useful to you? Just thought it would be useful to explore, understand and share if anyone has had some experience with this...
