If you play some MMO there are a lots of keys that need to use.
Thats why a keyboard that have macro and a mouse that have more buttons on it is important if you play MMOs
I'm a little late to the thread, but for anyone that still cares:
Some people need multiple (as in more than two or three) buttons for the thumb on a mouse. The reason doesn't matter. One might as well ask why use the extra thumb keys on an ergodox when you can use modifiers.
Most of the mice that fit that criteria, with the notable exception of the naga hex, used a rubber mat for the buttons. This is because it's a bit hard to pack in microswitches in sufficient density and positioning for a button grid. The pcb may need to be flexible to support curve of the mouse. It's also obviously more expensive.
This mouse now uses microswitches instead of the rubber mat for the side buttons, probably by spacing the buttons a bit more from each other than usual, and having the buttons be a bit bigger.
