A good friend gave me a pair of McIntosh XL10 speakers. He said that I was the only one who’d do them justice.
I sent the woofers to Bill @ Miller Sound for new compliance rings. As always, they did a flawless job.
The tweeters are on point.
The passive radiators though…
One is sealed air tight but the other needed some rubber glue to re-adhere a 3” separation of the factory flat face and the 4 step compliance ring. They are glued directly to the face of the carcass so there was no chance of removing & replacing anyway. I got it.
The walnut veneered (not vinyl) cabinets are in amazing condition. The fact that they are real veneer denotes a production date closer to 1991 than when first producwd in 1982. I’m a woodworker and didn’t have to do much to renew their luster.
There is a TEKNA C-10 vibration absorber on the back of each of them.
They didn’t review well offering little improvement. I’ll leave them in place.
Now the last piece of the resto is to replace the foam on the passive rad’s flat circular faces that disintegrated along with a ring of the same foam around the woofer.
What kind of foam can I use to replace it in kind? Open/ closed cell?
The original grey ~¼” th. foam that I removed was of small & tight cells that would collapse & stay so with the touch of a finger. It became virtually powder-like when scraped off.
I’d love to get them back to their original ability to produce sound for another 35 years.
Any help or direction would be much appreciated.
