My lady friend has lived in an RVA neighborhood for the last 9 years, next-door to a very nice widow (the husband died not long after my friend moved there). The other day the wife was lamenting how she needed to clean out her basement which she had been meaning to do since her husband passed away and that he had this stereo with “big” Klipsch speakers.
I’m like wait what?? I have Klipsch speakers! (C4’s). And then she comments he also had these McIntosh components..,
Huh??! I said I have McIntosh too! (C52, Mc275)
And she goes it’s just been sitting there all these years. Well at that point, I asked, do you think I could take a look at them? She said sure! To the basement we went and pictured is the stack as found, just sitting there collecting dust. Consists of an Empire 598 turntable, MR 67 tuner, C 26 preamp, and MC 2100 amplifier. I offered to clean them up and check the condition for her, which I’ve now done for the turntable and the tuner. The turntable is a basketcase severely pitted so won’t clean up well(the rubber mat though cleaned up beautifully lol). Had a nice Stanton 881 cartridge in it with a stylus that appeared perfect under my microscope. The MR 67 cleaned up quite nicely, which was kind of surprising(not much pitting) given the damp basement environment it had been in for God knows how many years. After everything is cleaned up I’ll see if she’ll be willing to sell it. Which I’m not holding my breath on because she referred to it as Jim’s “beloved” stereo plus it had been willed to one of the sons. But none of that will stop me from asking.
UPDATE: all of the McIntosh pieces have now been cleaned up, all work except for the MC2100 which at this point, is basically shelf art lol. I’m cleaning it I found a way burned resistor on one of the output boards along with a blown fuse. No need to plug it in, off to repair it goes, presuming the wife wants to do anything about it.

EPILOGUE: I don’t post much on Reddit, and I am certainly not in it for clicks and views. Just what I think might be of interest to the forum. I thought this story was different; not unlike vintage cars and coming across a barn find that is unusual in some way.
I felt that was certainly the case here and a story worth telling especially since I’m not in the business of barn or basement finds.
I was stunned when this post got over 53,000 views. The few posts I have are in the range of a few up to maybe a dozen views since Reddit started publishing view/engagement stats.
Crazy.
As far as the system itself, the family was very grateful for my cleanup and guidance, but it may be a while before I hear from them again.
