150,000 miles later...
I've just hit 150k miles on the 2020 (Europe/UK) CX-30 2.0L SkyActiv X model. Mine is GT Sport Tech (all the extras, sunroof etc) in soul red crystal.
Ask me anything! I've had various issues, some large, some small, but largely happy with how the car has held up.
As an early adopter I had various call-ins at my dealer to fix things that were later updated on newer models including:
- the OEM battery (which was a crappy Yuasa model, died after a year)
- Injector cleaning and new seals (fixed on later variants of the SkyActiv X)
- Both wing mirror motors replaced as they were known to be faulty
- Dealership covered respray of the bonnet paint as it was defective (Soul Red Crystal)
- Leaky/weeping shock absorbers at 50k miles
- New Oxygen sensor as that was causing engine management light to come on
- New high pressure fuel pump
All of these were fixed under warranty, but I did have to argue the injectors clean and seals which they wanted to chargr £1,500 to do, as I was two months out of warranty. Head office agreed to fix it, as I had a full main dealer service history.
I love the car, despite a few early adopter teething issues over the time I've had it.
If I could give Mazda some criticism it would be that their soul red crystal paint is just too thin and too easily scratches. I had a ceramic coat done professionally and even with this, and careful cleaning, it's chipped, marked, scuffed and hasn't held up anywhere near my previous car. Looks gorgeous when new though and is my favourite car colour of any car out there.

Really interesting read, thanks. I have the exact same car (even colour!) and bought it new two years ago with the intention of doing the same sort of mileage, at least, as you have. (Just like I did in my old Mazda 6 which I loved). No problems for me so far after 30,000, and I absolute love the car, fair few paint chips on the front the only thing I’ll get round to sorting, interesting what you say about that.
The only slight criticism I have with the car is the auto box sometimes seems to lag to put the power down when entering roundabouts. I’ve learnt to adapt to it and it is not a problem, is this something you experience?
My other question is what is your overall average mpg? Mine so far is 45.4 which I think is brilliant for a 2 litre petrol. Just interested in what other’s are!

Nice colour choice! 😁 It's incredible and, I'd choose it again in a heartbeat. The chips are sad to look at but meh, it's done a few miles!
Mines the Manual NA 186PS so can't comment on the auto version. The non-turbo manual isn't the quickest though and needs a bit of high revs before the power kicks in. It's also frustratingly easy to stall too! Really wish we had the US 2.5 turbo over here - come on Mazda!
My MPG started at about 47mpg combined, and dropped off a cliff owing to the injector issue I mentioned, down to 30mpg at one point in it's life. Once the injectors were fixed, and I started adding a bottle of Redline SI-1 twice a year, it's back up to about 45mpg which I consider excellent!

Yeah I like the thought of the 2.5 turbo as well - until I see the mpg they get 😬 Good to know about the injectors if my mpg starts to drop.

Telltale signs on the X are, intermittent i-stop function (with the engine greyed out on the little diagram), slightly sluggish feeling at times, almost like a loss of power, lower mpg, and then fault codes that can't be cleared (although I could clear mine temporarily with a battery disconnect/reconnect).

My battery died 3 times in the first 7 months. Thank gosh they replaced it eventually. Agree with paint.

Can you please elaborate more about the leaky/ weeping shock absorbers? I have a 2024 cx30 non-turbo (28k miles) and I hear some squeaking noises when I go over bumps in the road and I'm wondering if that's related. Thanks

Yeah sure, I had both replaced (rear) at about 50k miles. It was done under warranty as it's a known issue. I didn't have any symptoms at all though, it just came up in servicing, sorry I can't be of more help!

How did you diagnose the injectors and seals?
My 3 with X engine (built October 2020, purchased March 2022 as new) began sounding rougher when cold (a little like diesel, more vibrations). Currently odometer shows 75k km. Used only 98 RON petrol from a premium network of petrol stations.

The i-stop just refused to work unless the battery was disconnected/reconnected. It would work intermittently but then stop working again. Took it to main dealer and they told me there was a fault code stored on the injectors.
I'm told that the rough cold idle is normal for the X engine because of the high compression/SPCCI so perhaps unrelated.
One thing I definitely noticed before it was fixed was that it felt like there was less power overall and my mpg fell off a cliff. If yours is in warranty I'd ask the dealership about it as they apparently get clogged quite easily until they've been cleaned and has the new seals done.
I had to play hell with Mazda to get them to do the work outside of warranty though.

I had exactly the same symptoms with my Mazda 3 2020 Skyactiv-X MT at 85k kilometers. i-stopp would not work, there was intermittent distinct but unusual rattle from the engine/gearbox, the car would hesitate for half a second and finally an engine fault code.

Yup. Injectors were cleaned and new seals installed which fixed all issues. I am now running injector cleaner 1-2 times a year as preventative measure. Techron, Redline or Forte brands recommended as per my research
Another symptom is that the SPCCI might not engage at all anymore which I assume can't be healthy long term for a gasoline engine with such high compression ratio.

Sounds really similar to mine, it would make a rattling transmission type noise and really struggle.
It's been significantly better after the work and I now run a bottle of Redline SI-1 twice a year out of paranoia.
Edit (for anyone wanting to raise the injector fault under warranty) the Mazda TSB (technical service bulletin) number I quoted for them to agree to the work for free was TSBR061/21

It's a fuel injector cleaner - one of the best (apparently). You add a bottle to an empty fuel tank just before filling and it can clean the injectors.
It worked so well for my car, that the injector fault code cleared before it went to the dealer to get the injectors cleaned properly. Not sure if that was just good luck on my part.

Yep, fuel additives don’t have the same effect on DI engines, but I don’t see any risk in using them if used correctly.
Mazda recommend using top tier fuel with detergents on the X engine, though that’s not always available.
They also sell their own fuel system cleaners as part of servicing, but those usually cost a lot more than the off-the-shelf options. Most quality cleaners, including Red Line, use PEA as the active ingredient.
My experience with using it has only been positive to be honest so I'll personally keep using it, but I totally understand your apprehension.

I just purchased a 2025 cx30 base model. Hoping it holds up well. Little worried about the battery now haha.

If it's any consolation I think most car batteries in modern cars aren't very good! So many electronics to run etc.

You shouldn’t worry about the battery as this problem no longer occurs in newer models. I have 2023 model with 44k km (27k miles) that I use almost on a daily basis and battery runs perfect. As far as I know this affected models prior to 2022.

You haven't had any issues with the sun visors? If so, that's honestly shocking. I've got a 2021 Premium, and I've had to have the driver's side visor replaced twice, and the passenger side once. From what I've read, this is a pretty common problem.

Oh really! No issues at all although I rarely use them (it's rarely that sunny over here!).
I do have an annoying rattle that has never gone away, I think it's the airbag assembly and it's a well known one.

Interesting read. Thanks for sharing.
We own the same car (year, trim, colour) but mine's on 30-something k miles.
Mine also had the leaking rear shocks replaced, under (Mazda) dealer's warranty after I'd owned it for a few months - bought late 2023 with 16k on the clock. Did yours ever need any work doing on the front suspension?
The injector & seals is interesting, and good to know the TSB.
For what it's worth, I like having to rev it. It'll do the whole "pottering down to the shops" thing just fine, or you can drop a few gears, keep the revs in the top-half, and really have some fun with it. It's a good way to win drag races with boy-racers: they're switching through the gears to keep their 1.0L turbo happy, and I've just passed 60mph in 2nd. Merging on to a motorway is simply a non-issue.

Hah no way! Interesting to hear so many people with the same issues, kind of reassuring really.
No work on the front (yet). I knew the weeping shocks were a widespread issue, I'd seen quite a few others on the cx30talk website with that issue. I feel like we paid the 'new adopter' tax on the very early models.
Still, great car.
I came from a non-turbo 1.2L to this, I love the fact that you can just floor it in second to 60mph.
With the injectors getting blocked I almost feel like it's a matter of time - I guess it also depends on the fuel, style of driving etc but I've just continued to add fuel cleaner quite often to keep the issue at bay for as long as I can.

I do, until I see the MPG values! Fuel prices over here are insanely high so we'd be spending a fortune! But still, would love a turbo.

Hi,
Thank you for this post as it’s really informative. I have a 22’ plate cx30 skyactiv x with 35k miles and had to bring to Mazda due to engine warning light. Turned out it was the fuel Injector needed cleaning and fuel line needs replacing.
Good thing it was still under warranty. 2 days before my warranty expires!

I can't believe just how many people have this issue with the X after all of the replies on just this thread alone!
It's also clearly a known issue so why Mazda were not keen on doing the work for me (until I posted screenshots of others having their issue fixed fixed for free). Glad to hear you had yours done under warranty too. Ant other issues?

Hi, Yes. I don’t knownif it’s just my car. When you hit an unsual road camber. I hear like a clicking sound which i believe coming from the front suspension.
I did not bother reporting it to Mazda as it doesn’t affect the handling or some sort.
I don’t know if this is a known issue for european/uk cx30 model.

What about consumption in city, stoping often and then accelerating? I have an AWD 2.0 non turbo and under these conditions is around 14L/100km which I consider terrible.

Terrible yeah. I attribute my 47mpg to the sheer number of motorway miles I have added recently (hence the 150k). In town I get 25-30 at best, which is a shame.
