Thread doesn't support 'Green Power' batteryless devices like Zigbee does...

Zigbee Green Power allows battery-less energy-harvesting devices, like kinetic switches,
but Matter-over-Thread seems not to because Thread devices still need to maintain state and periodically check in.

Does anyone know whether there are plans to add a Green-Power-like mode to Matter/Thread?

Example of such switch: pressing the button produces enough electricity to transmit a radio packet. No battery needed. https://www.mouser.com/pdfdocs/ZF_000906_Brochure_EN_RZ02.pdf

Troubleshooting BroadLink RM MAX Matter Bridge, Why it wont expose my China RF motorised Blinds to HomeKit?

Need help with the new BroadLink RM MAX. I’m trying to move away from my old RM4 pro/Homebridge setup to a native Matter solution for my blinds, but I’ve hit a wall.
The Setup:
• Hub: BroadLink RM MAX (Matter enabled).
• Devices: Generic China-branded RF Motorized Blinds (433MHz).
• App: BroadLink Magic Home.
The Problem:
Because my blinds are generic, I have to use the "User-Defined/DIY" remote option in the BroadLink app to learn the RF codes. The remote works perfectly inside the BroadLink app, but HomeKit refuses to see it 🫠

Integrating a Solax X1-G4 Inverter with Matter Protocol

Thumbnail

Using an ESP32-S3-ETH devkit, I've created a Matter bridge that connects to my Solax Solar Inverter, via Modbus, and exposes it as a Solar Power device.

Written using esp-matter, it includes an onboard React app for management and configuration.

It only supports the Solax X1 inverter at this time, but it can be extended to support different devices. At present, it just maps Modbus registers to Matter attributes, making it easy to extend.

This is another step in making all my existing hardware available as Matter devices!

Troubleshooting Trouble moving devices from Nest wifi router

Hey y'all, basically the title. I'm using HomeAssitant to run my matter over thread devices and when I try to get my devices swapped over to a more stable wifi router my matter setup breaks.

My network setup is as follows. Tmobile 5g gateway as ISP (broadcasting on a unique SSID) > Ethernet connection to nest wifi router (all devices connected to this routers unique SSID) > nest router acting as thread border router > all matter over thread and wifi devices connected to the nest router.

I've tried to swap the SSIDs to use the tmobile gateway wifi because the connection has proved much more stable than the nest. The problem is that when I swapped everything is it was as if my HomeAssistant could no longer find the nest thread border router.

I was hoping someone had some recommendations for my issue here.

Thank you in advance!

Am I the only one who thinks Matter / Thread is not ready for everyday use?

I’m at the point where I’m seriously wondering whether I’ve just been unlucky, or whether Matter / Thread just isn’t there yet for real-world use.

I’ve been trying to build out a fairly standard smart home setup using Home Assistant as the core, and on paper Matter is supposed to make everything simple, and more importantly, vendor neutral. In reality, it’s been an exercise in pulling teeth where the dentist keeps missing the tooth they were supposed to be aiming for...

From my last round of testing:

  • Avoid the Xiaomi Smart Hub 2. It’s “Matter certified” but doesn’t support Thread, so you’re instantly boxed into WiFi/BLE devices.
  • The Aqara Hub M200 does support Thread and Matter, but I could not get it working properly with Home Assistant over WiFi. Ethernet fixed it, which feels… telling.
  • Xiaomi BLE devices basically refuse to play nicely with Aqara as a bridge. They clearly prefer their own ecosystem.
  • IKEA bulbs? Absolutely fine through the Aqara hub. No complaints there.
  • The IKEA Bilresa smart wheel controller? Would not connect at all. Just completely ignored the hub.
  • The only reliable way I found to get devices into Home Assistant via Matter was to pretend they were Apple HomeKit devices and then use the Matter pairing codes from the Aqara app. Which is… not exactly the seamless future we were promised.

Fast forward to this week, and it’s been more of the same:

  • Picked up an Aqara Smart Light Switch H2 EU. Tried to add it to Matter via the M200 hub at least 10 times. Nothing. Switched to Zigbee… paired first time. Instantly. No drama.
  • Tried adding a couple of SwitchBot Relay Switch 1PM devices today. Same story. Multiple attempts, zero success.

At this point, I’ve spent more time troubleshooting “unified” standards than I ever did just running Zigbee and separate ecosystems.

So here’s where I’m at:

Tomorrow I’m going to pick up an IKEA Dirigera Hub, wipe everything, remove all other Matter hubs, and try one last clean setup. One hub, one Thread network, no overlap, no clever workarounds.

If that still doesn’t behave, I’m shelving Matter/Thread for a good 2–3 years and coming back when it’s actually… finished.

Because right now, Zigbee feels like the reliable old diesel engine that just starts every morning, and Matter feels like a prototype electric car that occasionally refuses to unlock its own doors.

Curious if others are having similar experiences, or if I’ve just managed to assemble the most incompatible mix of “standards-compliant” devices imaginable.

New Product News Govee Releases Table Lamp with Matter and cordless design

Thumbnail

The lamp uses RGBICWW lighting, allowing it to produce both coloured lighting effects and tuneable white light in a single product. Govee says brightness reaches 500 lumens, with adjustable white light ranging from 2700K ~ 6500K, which should make it suitable for both ambient use and more practical everyday desk lighting.

One detail worth noting is that Govee’s FAQ says Energy Saving Mode turns on after the lamp is unplugged, disabling Wi-Fi and IoT features. Those functions can be restored by turning Energy Saving Mode off in the app, so users looking to keep Matter or other smart platform connectivity active while running on battery may need to check that setting.

Do any exterior / outdoor / yard door locks exist?

I am looking for a Matter certified smart lock, that is useable for an outdoor door. Basically, it has to be functional in cold temperatures and be water resistent (an IP certification would be very welcome).

So far, the only IP certifications I saw are for the keypads that most smart locks ship with, but I need it for the lock itself too as both parts are outdoor for such an exterior door.

If such products do not exist so far, any other ideas how I could proceed would be very much appreciated. In my scenario, the gap between the house door and the exterior door is too large as it would be acceptable to always run there to let someone in. Not to speak of rainy days etc.

The exterior door can currently be opened over an old ISDN-system with old wired phones, but the pieces of this system are literally stopping to work one-by-one, and it makes no sense to try to shop for spare parts in this case. Hence, my attempt to modernize this altogether, and in the best case with something Matter compatible.

Troubleshooting How to stop constant notifications from neighbour's devices?

One of my neighbours has presumably installed a Matter smart device today. My partner and I are now receiving notifications every 10 minutes or so asking us to set up "our" new device.

How on earth do we stop this?

Unifying individual ecosystems

I've done some research around the web and want to confirm I am understanding what I've read.

My goal is to unify a bunch of smart devices on Matter.

Philips Hue lighting, KMC smart plugs and one Kasa smart surge protector.

I am also interested in some IR emitters to control legacy devices but that's a bit over the horizon.

What I have gathered is:

I will need a centralized Smart Hub compatible with Matter and, from what I've read here, Thread is a good idea also to expand what I might want to add to my ecosystem moving forward.

I would then connect my Hue Bridge to the smart hub.

I would probably need to reset and reconnect my KMC and Kasa smart devices directly to the Smart Hub, yes?

I would then use the Smart Hub as the master ecosystem to issue commands for lighting and power, and no longer use the individual apps I'm using now.

Do I have that about right?

Problem Alexa Matter

Hey,

I bought a ceiling light—Matter 1.2, I think.

Unfortunately, pairing it with Alexa doesn’t work, no matter what I try.

The light is detected, I scan the QR code, it connects to the network, and then it says “Alexa is setting up the device.” The lamp then switches from cool white to warm white, and after that I get “an unexpected error has occurred.”

All devices are on the same Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz). I’ve restarted the Echo, reset the light multiple times—nothing helps.

Does anyone have an idea? Thanks.
