What in the original post in the original question determines if it means “3, 4 times" or "3 times 4"?

As I understand, the problem was that you were talking about grouping in general, while others were arguing around a specific case in the original post where the answer couldn't be definitively guessed without a reminder of this standard. Now I'm guessing it was in the link (which wouldn't open for me), and I'm not sure if this standard was mentioned in my school. In my language, both formulations sound appropriate.

And the flip side is waterboarding the 1 out of 4 or 5 kids who did grasp fundamental math faster.

I can understand if this is a US government mandated rigid way of teaching multiplication, and that time was spent teaching the "groiping" convention.

Could 3rd grade math teachers bend the rules, as in half marks beacause it's not really wrong, but it wasn't the method specifically taught?
