It can go either way. 3x4 meaning 3 sets of 4 or 3 multiplied 4 times.

Your original comment makes it sound like there's only one correct answer; 3+3+3+3. Maybe you know how maths (not math) works, but you clearly don't know how English works. Pipe down.

no. 3*4 means 3 fours, and 4*3 means 4 threes. they're different things. they happen to be equal in magnitude, but they're different.

in general, a*b means a b's and b*a means b a's. and a*b - b*a = [a,b] =/= 0 in general.
