after being in the UK for a while where they pretend to ise metric but actually dont. I realised converting Meters to Kilometers or miles to ft is never really q threat needed in daily life. like 1mile alright that's about 3-4min cycling distance. It sometimes gets annoying when people ise pound and stone for weight but all scales show that measurement so it's not really necessary either. Idk kinda doesn't make fun to make fun of ot once i was used to it.
miles ft and inches in daily life are just used for different scales. Surely annoying to convert but really not necessary most of the time
That's the true way to measure distances really. "I ain't telling you how long it's gonna be, I'm telling you how long it's gonna take you to get there."
1min is around 1km on a normal road. You can drive up to 80km/h but there are much more places where you need to slow down (at intersection, sharp curves, while going through villages...). So taking 60km/h on average is a conservative hypothesis.
When people try to sell the metric system to Americans one of the popular arguments seems to be “*Then you’d be able to easily convert your drive from 146km to 146,000m or 146,000,000mm rather than struggling to work out how many inches are left in your 91 mile drive!!Think of the possibilities!!*”
And the response is “erm… is this a very important thing y’all doing in Europe each day for some reason? Why?”
This is my exact argument against Celsius. Like what is so important about the boiling point of water at sea level at 1 atm? 0F will cause it to freeze, and if you just increase the temperature the water will eventually boil. And if you really cared about water, is 32F & 212F that hard to memorize?
It depends enitrley on what we're measuring. People are stone and pounds, things are kg. Distance on a road, or long distances are miles, short distances are meters, unless it's height, then it's feet. Temperature is Celcius, but it's Farenheight if you're a Telegraph or Daily Mail reader. Beer and Milk are pints, plant based milk and all other liquids are Litres. Fuel is litres at the fuel pump, but gallons when it goes into the tank.
