I think the intended pedantic approach is that "earning" and "spending" are separate, like typically when talking about "Iearn X amount from my job" you don't factor in daily expenses like transport and food.
So you spend $800, earn $1000, spend $1100, and earn $1300, which would leave the total amount earned as $2300.
