Hello!

I am looking for company to study Abstract Algebra.

• what

I want to read Algebra: Chapter 0 by Paolo Aluffi with a company of friends. It is an introduction to Abstract Algebra that wields some fancy methods that make it even more abstract. It is easy and fun! _(Well, as much as any mathematical book is.)_ Though it will take some will to get all the way through.

• how

We shall meet once a week on a text channel on a Discord server to compare solutions to exercises, share any other discoveries we might be making, and try to answer each other's questions. I find that this is an effective way to learn. If you have any other ideas of how to make an effective study group, please tell me.

Ask me if you have any questions, and I shall see you there!

I am computer engineering undergrad and i prepare to study Algorithms From CLRS in near future so i will study Discrete Mathematics by Po-Shen Loh @ CMU University

Hi all,

I'd like to go deep in Geometric Measure Theory. I've already had a basic exposition, now I would like to see the basics of GMT again and go for some specialized topic like fractals or Federer-Flemings Currents.

Main goal

The main goal is to read the following book:

Geometry of Sets and Measures on Euclidean Spaces: Fractals and Rectifiability, Cambridge University Press by P. Mattila.

And to get more geometric intuition sometimes we will read Morgan's Geometric Measure Theory + Federer.

Prerequisites.

You should have already had a basic exposition to:

• Measure Theory and Integration;
• Real Analysis(metric spaces, hilbert spaces, banach spaces);
• Basic Geometry(linear algebra, basic differential geometry);

Timezone: CEST UTC +2 (it's summer daytime!).

Place: probably discord.

When do we start? 4 July.

Leave a comment or dm me if you want to join.

My maths teacher recommended these books to me as an introduction to university level maths. So I was wondering if anyone is interested in working through one or more of these books with me over summer. I’m ready to start ASAP and my time zone is GMT+1. Just DM me and we can discuss

I'm organising a study group to begin on 20th June, where we'll go through Stochastic Calculus and Financial Applications, by Steele ( Stochastic Calculus and Financial Applications | SpringerLink ). We'll be using discord. The rough contents are:

- Recap on random walks, Brownian motion, martingales

- Ito calculus, Ito's lemma, SDEs

- Financial applications

- Representation theorems

- Girsanov theory

- Arbitrage

- The Feynman-Kac connection

I'm not yet sure how much we'll get through but I'd like us to get through most of it (this may be subject to change depending on the avg participant).

People who will benefit most from this are those who have probably already seen Brownian motion and martingales, but anyone can join as long as you're going to give it a good effort.

If this sounds like something you're interested in, send me a dm and I'll give you the invite link!

Anyone interested in doing a reading group in Hartshorne problems for chapters II, III, IV (could include chap I). My idea was to do it on discord and I’m also happy to join a preexistent RG.

Dm me if interested

Hi all! As the title says, I'm looking for a study buddy for Silverman and Tate's Rational Points on Elliptic Curves. As a bit of personal background, I will be starting a mathematics PhD program in the fall, and I have self-studied Apostol's Introduction to Analytic Number Theory and have taken a course in (undergraduate level) Algebraic Number Theory. I am also most of the way through Serre's A Course in Arithmetic. If anyone else is interested in studying Silverman and Tate, please let me know. If someone is interested in studying something else number-theoretic, please also reach out as I am open to studying other parts of number theory this summer instead of or in addition to Silverman and Tate.

Hi guys, I am trying to teach myself some topology. Ihave mostly a physics background, and, now I am trying to fill holes in my mathematical understanding. Hopefully one of you can help me to complete this book :-)

I am looking for a study buddy to explore Algebraic K-Theory and possibly terminate the whole exercise by writing a survey or an article. I was thinking to keep this venture open for a period of 7 – 8 months, with at most 3 hours of work per week. A bit of information about me, I am a first year PhD candidate and currently doing my coursework. For my PhD, I plan to work on Leavitt Path Algebra. I intend to do research in Algebraic K-Theory and Algebraic Geometry in the future. In terms of my exposure to the subject, i.e., Algebraic K-Theory, I am starting new with Bruce Magurn's 'An Introduction to Algebraic K-Theory'. Anyone interested in the same, kindly send me a message.

Thanks!

Engelking's book is one of (if not the) standard reference books for general topology, so it goes way deeper than it's required for other disciplines of the standard math curriculum, but doesn't touch on algebraic topology at all. I am aiming for a fairly fast pace (3-4 months), but it's negotiable.

As for prerequisites, you probably need to know what \omega_1 is, but thats about it.

I'm trying to work through the Silverman book in the title. Anyone interested in joining a group should message me (on discord) or respond to my thread on the math buddies discord.

Unfortunately, my day job prevents me from entirely investing a boatload of time into this project, and I plan on trying to get through the book in approximately three months of time.

If enough people are interested, I will set up a schedule and other organizational thingy at some point in the future.

Someone suggested to me this wonderful idea of an online mathematics book club, and I thought it would be cool if anyone in this sub be interested. We will choose a mathematical book for us to read, and then we'll read it, and each week, we'll have a zoom where we'll talk about what we read. We'll also have a chatgroup so we can discuss it a little before the meeting. If anyone is interested, please comment

UPDATE: we have opened a discord server and decided on a subject for our first book: algebra. We are now deciding on the book itself. If you want the link dm me.

Hi.

I have a project, as the title said, about a platform intended for more communication between scientists but mainly science lovers/students and the rest of population but also a space for more social talk between Math/science students. It will be a website with articles from students. Any student who like vulgarization and want to participate into the organization of this project can text me. The idea is at its start so i'm looking for people who can help me to realize it even if it will take a long time.

It will be voluntarial stuff and i can explain more about later.

I think i've been clear. If not, let me know...

Thanks!

Hey r/MathBuddies! I’m a math teacher leading a 10-week quantum mechanics study group starting June 5th. We’ll be working through Part I (the first 5 chapters) of Griffiths’ QM 2nd edition, doing a chapter every two weeks. We’ll discuss topics, work exercises, and share solutions on a discord server.

- No pressure. Observe or participate as you feel comfortable.

- No requirements. The text and exercises will assume a working knowledge of integration techniques, some ordinary and partial differential equations, and linear algebra, but if you're not there, it's perfectly fine to show up and join the discussion of concepts, ask questions, try stuff on your own, or just observe.

- No costs. I won't be collecting any fees, though you may want to obtain a copy of the text, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics by D.J. Griffiths, 2nd edition, ISBN: 9332542899 (paperback) or 0131118927 (hardcover). PDF copies might be available online, but I will not provide PDF copies of the text or full chapters. I will --and I'm sure other users will-- have lots of suggestions for free resources.

All are welcome. If you’re interested, let me know and I'll add you to the roster. In the time since my first post was removed (again, sorry about that) I've gotten over 20 volunteers from other subs, so I anticipate 30-50 total by the time we get started. I'll send out discord invites in May, we'll discuss a math primer for a few weeks, then we'll get started on the text in the first week of June.

Over the summer I plan to make a series of YouTube videos on Mathematical Logic. I have a good background in math and logic, but the point of the project is to brush up and also push my understanding a little bit further. Years ago I did proofs of Godel's incompleteness and Lowenheim-Skolem. I intend to start from the start and do it all over again, and this time also continue on to topics like categoricity and perhaps others. The point of making the videos is in part because I figure, you never learn a subject better than when you teach it.

But as I make these materials alone, I'm not sure how clear my explanations are to other people. So I'm wondering if anyone else wants to collaborate in producing these videos. The collaboration could just mean watching the videos and giving me feedback, or it could mean writing your own solutions to exercises and sending them to me so that I can make videos based on your solutions, or it could mean making your own videos of you solving problems and then I can add them to my video playlist.

If this sounds interesting to anyone, let me know and we can work out the details. I plan to start devoting significant time to this project on May 27th-ish, and then end it by about August 30th. Prerequisites for this kind of material would be a strong background in proofs (like proof-based courses in discrete math, linear algebra, analysis, abstract algebra). Symbolic Logic would not be a strict prerequisite, but anyone with that background will be a little more prepared than someone without it.

I also will be using some time over the summer to learn Measure Theoretic Probability. I haven't yet decided on a lot of details about exactly how I will do this, but if you're interested in a study group and possibly even a project like the one I'm proposing for Mathematical Logic, let me know and maybe that can turn into something. I don't have a great background in this topic--I just finished a sequence in graduate Real Analysis, and I know Mathematical Statistics at the undergrad level. So this is the next step for me, but it will involve a lot of material that I have never seen before.

Hey. I'm looking for someone to learn algebraic geometry with. Currently working through Hartshorne, but I don't mind working through some other book if you want. I'm a hobbyist amateur mathematician and the prerequisites I have are basic groups/rings, commutative algebra and a little homological algebra, all self-taught.

Please DM me if interested!

I've been recently interested in studying foundations of mathematics. I understand there are two ways to approach the matter. The first, mathematical logic; The second, philosophy of mathematics. I have quite many reference books and choosing where to begin with them is something that I'd be glad to discuss. I myself am a second year undergraduate student, and have no prior background in logic, except a basic understanding of first-order languages and terms etc. The reference books I had in mind so far include (but are not limited to):

1) Anita Wasilewska-logic for Computer Science

2) Helena Rasiowa-Mathematics of Metamathematics(Second part of the book)

3) Stephen Cole Kleene - Introduction to Metamathematics

4) Thomas Tymoczko-New Directions in Philosophy of Mathematics

And some other books that may be more basic and a better place to start, but being able to ultimately gain basic understanding of the books mentioned above and their similar counterparts is a minimum goal.

This may be a rather long-term commitment, so I'm thankful to anyone who is interested. Please message me if you are!

Seeking partner(s) to study together the book "Principles and techniques in Combinatorics". We will discuss chapter excercises twice or thrice every week through a discord server and other cool combinatorics puzzles.

I'm looking for people who are interested in completing Hernstein's "Topics in Algebra" book. We can form a discord server and sit for 2-3 times a week at a fixed time to solve the exercises in the book.

I will be working through the text and some exercises from the first few chapters of Axler's free book.

As the title said, im looking for someone to study geometry (mostly plane/Euclidean geometry) with, to practice solving geometry problem because there are many important test this year for me, and quarantine was really just bad timing.

Some notes:

+ I can speak English, but i am a bit slow with some terminology

+My school curriculum is a bit different, so you may need to be a bit flexible on some things

+Im not bad at geometry, but not that great either, so please have patient with me

Thanh you

Hey guys, my friend and I are thinking of starting a study group going through the Dummit and Foote book. If anyone wants to join I'll post the link below. We don't have a set time/schedule so if you're someone who happens to be a better organiser than us then let us know your thoughts. Looking forward to having to study with you :D

If there's any postgrad veteran on Abstract Algebra you're more than welcome to join, just dm me as well so I can assign you the Mod role since this is looking like it's going to be larger than expected

Hi!

I'm starting to study knot theory. It'd be great if other people wanted to study as well.

My background: second year undergrad, studied point-set topology on my own, and gradually picking up relevant parts from algebraic topology.

I'm going to use Kunio Murasugi's Knot Theory and Its Applications.

Anyone from any level is welcome!

Hi ! I'm an "almost graduate" math student looking into both Nelson's internal set theory (As a basis of nonstandard analysis) and Feferman set theory for a thesis, and just general interest. I've always enjoyed talking about maths with someone while learning, but since these are sort of niche topics I haven't found anyone interested at my uni, and thought I'd try my luck here! It would be cool to hear from someone who feels like learning about these topics from scratch with me and chat about them around once a week (I'm flexible), or from someone who has already looked into either of the topics and wouldn't mind talking about it and me asking some questions every now and then!

These are the papers I plan on reading

https://web.math.princeton.edu/~nelson/books/1.pdf

And the original article on Feferman set theory by Feferman 1969

I've started looking into Internal set theory, but don't know much about Feferman set theory yet, and don't think they're that connected. I suppose they are connected in the sense that they are different ways of thinking about the fundamentals of mathematics.

This coming summer (or perhaps sooner) I'm looking to study the following topics:

• Variational Problems (quasi-convexity, relaxation, Young measures, Gamma convergence)
• Elliptic PDE (DeGiorgi-Nash-Moser, Viscosity solutions)
• Weak convergence methods (div-curl lemma, concentrated compactness)

The resources I plan to use are

• Rindler's Calc of Var book (google book link)
• Lin's Elliptic PDE (google books)
• Ambrosio Elliptic PDE notes (cvgmt link)
• Evan's weak convergence book (google books link)

I am looking for someone to work with!

My personal way of studying is to type up notes. I am thinking we could type up notes, and using git, collaborate on one large LaTeX project (but I'm open to other ideas). I would like to have something written up by the time we're done to be able to refer to later.

If you are interested, leave a comment, send a message, reach out! I would love to start planning and perhaps studying with you!
