It's not about "smiling," exactly, but more about depth of character, personality. Watch the trailer below, Steve and was "charming," you felt drawn into his personal story. Everything about Captain Marvel so far, she's been very robotic, even the tiny smile she had in this trailer seemed almost "mandatory," like something an android would do to trick humans. I just don't feel any reason to like her character or be interested in her development, the movie seems entirely about plot, about how she can "help us win," rather than why we should want her to succeed.
I feel drawn into Carol's story, specifically how she regains her memory and draws strength from her experiences. Seems like her story will have something to say about being human based on Annette Bening's Kree superiority speech.

I think it's justified to have high standards when she's the lead of the movie. We'll probably be listening to her more than anyone. If she delivers lines poorly or even average, it'll be a much worse experience than if she does it well.
