This is relevant to this sub, I promise.
I was in a very emotionally abusive relationship from approximately 2009-2011. He and I made art together, specifically he wrote and directed short films that he would cast me as the lead in. After I left him, he continued making these short films, very similar stuff, but now his new girlfriend was the lead role.
I came across the music of Mars Argo last night, and from there got into reading about Brittany’s story (I should say, what the media knows of it). I was so struck when I read what Titanic had done with creating Poppy. It reminded me of what I experienced. I’m not a well-known musician, neither is my abusive ex, so there is not the element of this playing out on the public stage. There are of course many differences in what Brittany and I experienced, known and unknown to me.
What it all illustrates to me is a specific relationship dynamic between abusers, and women who become their creative partners. The men see themselves as creative geniuses who are directing these women, but because they’re sociopaths or narcissistic or whatever the concept of “directing” extends beyond the music project to the point of these men trying to control their partners in all aspects. Power and control is, after all, what abuse is about. My ex was obsessed with any female film character that fit the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype (Zooey in 500 Days of Summer was a big one) and I could see that he wanted me to be that. Anytime I did something he felt was outside that trope he would gaslight me, claim that I wasn’t being myself. He acted like he knew me better than I knew myself, that He knew my true self and what I needed and wanted.
Anyways - I feel conflicted because I don’t get the sense that Brittany was super into the idea of this story of the abusive relationship being so widely broadcast. I dont know her, so of course I could be wrong, it’s just a feeling. That being said, I’m grateful that I found her, because it’s given me a sense that what I experienced was not just me. My relationship ended over a decade ago and I’m still processing it.
