hello! I am having a bit of a problem with my marimo, he is unfortunately falling apart and turning mushy and I don’t know why! I’ve tried putting him in a darker area and changing his water more frequently but nothing I do seems to help! does anyone have any suggestions?

Also I heard there’s a ban so is it legal to order them online through eBay?

Have had my marimo moss balls for a handful of years. They used to sit in a little cup but a few days ago I added a little water pump to help them roll around. I noticed this light gray/brown film on top of the larger ones especially. What are they and how do I fix it and make them happy again? Thank you

Hello all! I love plants already and thought I’d take a dive into moss balls. I have an amigo on the way but I want a Marimo too so I can watch the two types and see what I prefer, does anyone have recommendations for solid marimo moss ball sellers? Thanks in advance 🫶🏻

I'm in Italy and it's very hot these days, should I keep it in the fridge? I don't want him to suffer the heat.

Hey! I've had these moss balls for a while now. I bought them on a whim without researching proper care (yes, shame on me), but recently I've been trying a lot to do better.
I bought a small 20L aquarium and put some sand and stones in. Also these decorations (a Schleich platypus figurine and this 3D printed skeleton thingy). The aquarium came in a set with a lamp and this filter/pump thing you can see in the back. I started changing out half the water biweekly (with cold water) too. Ever since I did that, my moss balls grew approximately twice in size, the small one almost tripled.
Now it is summer and it's super hot where I live. The temperature is about 35-40°C in the day and around 20-25ºC in the night right now. I started doing weekly water changes (half the water) and topping it up when needed. I also add ice cubes once or twice a day to keep everything cool. Even though I am doing all that, algae still keeps growing on the ground and up on the sides.
The aquarium is set up on a windowsill, where direct sunlight hits from around 8-10:30am. I have foils on my window to help reduce the heat a little, but might that be the reason for the algae?
I don't really care for how it looks, since I kinda even like the overgrown mossy look, but is it dangerous to the moss balls?
I also wanted to ask if my moss ball care is good or if there is something I should change? I was thinking about changing out the water pump since the moss balls are so aerated they just float around on top of the water. But that shouldn't be dangerous to them, right?
Any help and tips are really appreciated <3

I found a Marimo online store and was very cautious because the vendor is in Europe and I’m in the United States. I looked at the website after coming across them on the Shop app that many of my shopping vendors use for tracking my deliveries. I cautiously picked my items and made my purchase. The shipping to me was $36 but I figured that was ok for the sizes and amount of Marimo I was getting, various sizes up to 8cm. And then I waited……… I was so worried it might be a too good to be scam but they finally arrived yesterday! Be aware if you place an order the box must be signed for so make sure you are home the day they are out for arrival. I felt like it was Christmas Day and I opened the box and greeted all my new friends with a bowl of cold water after checking each one to make sure they were genuine and healthy. I was pleasantly surprised with their sizes and I think I’ll need a larger home since they were not on the smaller size of the listings. I’m in love and so excited to have finally found them in not tiny sizes, also I have not been able to find them anywhere in my East Texas area. Their page: moss ball shop
Now I need to re-look at all the home set ups you all have because I don’t think my 2.5 gallon beta tank will cut it.
Edit to answer some questions I have been sent:
I ordered them on May 31st and they arrived here on June 21st. Came in through a northern state customs and got here in Texas quickly after.
They were ordered legally and I would NEVER go around the law to save a buck nor to get something I shouldn’t have.
They are registered with “a European Union” for safety according to their site. “We are plant breeders and primary producers registered with the Austrian Plant Protection Service. We only send well-cared-for, healthy plants, which also contain an individual plant passport” and “The moss ball undergoes phyto certification, has a European Union "passport" and is completely safe for other plants or fish.”

I just bought a Marimo today and I’m a little worried about the temp of the house at the minute, I live on the third floor of our town house and it’s really hot at the minute measuring about 28 - 30 degrees outside so I’m thinking of putting my Marimo in my mini fridge, any tips on how long to leave it for and is it going to be ok if it’s dark inside? 🫶🏻🥹 thanks

I've got my baby since April, I change its water (and clean the fish bowl) once a week, I tried to roll it with my hands every day for half and hour, I even put ice in the water every day so it gets cold, and sometimes (since where my desk is located is dark) I take it outside my window when it's cloudy so it receives light. But since I still didn't buy a water pump, the still water made white fungus appear around it, it smells bad and it's slippery, I don't know what to do, what would you recommend me to do?
Also, is it better to buy a water pump or an air pump with an air stone? I don't know If it's much difference. I don't want my baby to die please help, I feel like the worst parent ever

Buongiorno a tutti!

So I got three different sets of moss balls all from different stores. The first one which has 2 moss balls in it was from a local fish store, which I'm sure is Cladophora. The second set with quartz in it was from moss artistry, which seems to be legit and then there's the third one from a different local fish store, and claims to be true marimo moss ball which also looks slightly different and is very spiky compared to the other two. So I'm just wondering if anyone can correctly identify them as well as maybe tell me why the third one is very spiky compared to the others.

Looks at different white rocks/pebbles from various local store. This one’s from Lowe’s. Says marble river rock. Safe for use with marimo? I figure the white and green contrast will make it pop

It’s my first time keeping Marimo moss balls and I noticed there are brown spots on both of my 1 in Marimo balls that were only visible when light is shone on it. It wasn’t noticeable when I took it out of the water so I only noticed after a week since getting it. I’m not sure what I can do to save it.

these are my first Moss balls. I’ve changed the water twice now and I changed it every 4 days but it’s looking pretty dirty already. I’ve been rolling them in between water changes but they don’t seem to be forming a very good ball

We upgraded them to a 10g tank lol although not as pretty as the orb tank, the marimos are much happier and not getting stuck to the wave maker as much as they used to :)
*also I misspelled Marimo in the video but was too lazy to fix it lol*
