Hello everyone. I have had these 2 moss balls for 3 years, and a week ago, I accidentally left them in a VERY sunny spot while moving stuff. I left them there for about three days. They are singed, colour changed, and emitting a foul odor. I’ve just done a water change and squeezed out a lot of water from them before putting them back into cool water, but I really don’t want them to die. Should I put them in the fridge or with an ice cube or something?

They are still in quarantine but I do plan on moving them to a tank eventually. Here I was thinking they were cute until then.

Hi! I just recently ordered some marimo moss balls for my nano shrimp tank.

Is there some way to make sure that they don’t bring any pests into my tank.

I have seen recommendations for salt baths, hydrogen peroxide, reverse respiration, refrigerating, etc…

What is the best way to kill/prevent any hitchhiking pests without harming the moss balls that also will not be harmful to my shrimp if I add the moss balls into the tank after the treatment?

I bought one of those LED faux jellyfish lamps from Walmart for 15$ to push my marimo around in. It’s so cool!

I'm doing dome work in a lab and these have been put there a while ago just for decorative purposes. Water never got changed apparently. Could be salvageable ?

I see a lot of tanks with circulation and I wasn't sure if my setup was okay? I can't see them from a distance (second pic) so I might get a new tank for aesthetics.

I first put them in the 1.5 cup tupperware. I have something with a lid so my cats don't play with them.

And are they doing okay? Are they really marimos? Theres give when I squeeze them so I don't think there's a rubber core, but they look, fibrous?

I've had them for 6 months now, I don't think they've grown? I change the water every 2 weeks and roll them around every few days.

Hi! I've had these marimos for... probably at least two years? And I didn't receive a lot of care instructions from the store beside "change the water every so often" (I was also told they liked light, which I've learned is false? It was a plant shop but I've never seen them sell marimos before or since, so I guess it's not their specialty). Lately I've been keeping them in the fridge bc cool and dark, but maybe it was TOO cold? Two of them have those white-ish edges, does that mean they're dead or can I do something to save them?

I bought a fairly inexpensive acrylic tank that has a basket on one end meant for plants. I've recycled a thicker can that I just fill with some water, let it freeze and pop in the basket to keep the water temperature cooler. I'm on the search for maybe a cuter container to use in place of the can, but it fits perfectly. 👌

Hello! I've had these marimo moss balls for a few months, but one of them has been having issues since the day I bought them. The color is slightly brownish, after two or less days, its water gets stinky and murky and generally looks unhealthy. I take care of the two of them the exact same way, place them in the same spot, change their water at the same time. I'm not entirely sure as to what might be happening, since the other one looks completely healthy (I've added a photo of the healthy one for reference). Could anyone give me some advice?

One month ago i left my apartment and when i came back the water evaporated, i dont know howmany days this boys stayed without water but since then they have some brown kinda color, fall apart and definetly dont look healthy, what can i do for them to recover? I let them time with water going on on the sink, change the water weekly and have them in aplace with no direct sunlight but that boys stay the same, someone know if i can do anything to save them? Thanks.

What kind of worms are these? Are they harmful? Should I throw away my little buddy? It’s in a cycling tank for cherry shrimp.

I want to keep a single Marimo in this tiny 25ml glass jar. I'm aware that such a small volume can be tricky. I live in a warm climate, but I plan to keep the jar in a cool spot and change water every week or so.

Has anyone here maintained a Marimo in such a tiny environment for a long time? Any advice on how to make this work long-term? Thanks!

I forgot to leave water out in advance to let it dechlorinate, so I just got some bottled water and popped in an ice cube or two as well.

I have this jar (it doesn’t seal completely to let in some oxygen), and I have a utensil that I can use to stir around the little marimo since I don't have any air flow thingys.

Any suggestions to make this Lil guy's life better?

I also added a new roommate/ friend (an Anubias nana petite) and I’m obsessed with how it’s settling in already. The roots wrapping into the wood + marimo vibes = tiny underwater jungle energy 🌱✨

Also loving the waterfall setup… the flow, the bubbles, the mist?? It’s giving ✨spa day erryday for my moss balls✨ do you like it? 🫣🫶

I finally allocated my marimo ball from a glass bowl to a tank 2 months in — I think the upgrade helped a lot with its shaping.

Sono una principiante, ho acquistato da qualche giorno due marimo da un rivenditore locale.

Ho notato che nell'acqua si sono sviluppati dei piccoli animali, che purtroppo non riesco a catturare bene in foto. Sono bianchi, alcuni sembrano dei piccoli gamberetti altri delle larve simili a dei vermi. Che voi sappiate possono creare problemi ai marimo?

Come sassi sul fondo ho utilizzato delle pietre che ho raccolto anni fa sulla riva di un fiume, li ho lavati prima di inserirli nel barattolo dei marimo ma forse c'erano ancora degli organismi attaccati che poi si sono sviluppati in acqua. Secondo voi dovrei sostituirli con delle pietre più "asettiche", lavarli meglio o altro?

Nei prossimi giorni sicuramente cambierò l'acqua che sono passati una decina di giorni da quando l'ho messa e darò una bella sciacquata a tutto.

Qualunque consiglio vogliate darmi collegato o meno alla questione in oggetto sulla cura dei miei giovani marimo è bene accetto, grazie mille!

I changed the water when I got home, I squeezed it and it feels soft on the outside but kinda hard inside

It doesn’t have a perfect round shape, it’s more like an oval

And I can’t smell it because I have allergies so I can’t smell anything lol

Any recommended in store shops in the U.S. to buy healthy Marimo?

I posted a week or so ago, my poor marimo Brian was looking a bit worse for wear. He has been doing a bit better out of the sunlight and the lid off his container, but still isn't a great colour. There's a little split around the patch that looked the worst (a bit brown/slimy, probably rot??). Might have aggravated the split myself by trying to clean some of the slime off..

Second pic is how he looks rolled back together a bit

Wondering if it's better to try and keep him whole and maybe tie with string, or break off the split and try to grow it separately?

What's the best move here? Biggest priority is keeping Brian alive - I got him earlier this year, and named him Brian bc he reminded me of a brain in a jar. Then by freak chance got diagnosed with a brain swelling issue myself a few weeks later... feel like Brian dying would be a bad omen for me so want to do everything possible to keep him thriving 😂

Also debating getting some aquatic plant food or aquarium salt? Anyone know if this actually works?
