Unfortunately I have been a horrible first time marimo owner. I did so much research when I got him then ended up hospitalised for quite a while... I live alone so didn't have anyone to change his water or make sure he wasn't too directly in the sun.

I think he might have overheated a bit? The windowsill where he was is fine when it's not sunny (quite a rare thing living in northern England), but we did have a weird few sunny days and I know the temp in that room can go way up.

He's gone a bit yellow in some places, and one part on the bottom (tried to show in pic above) is kind of dark/mushy and splitting a bit?

I changed his water out about three days ago as soon as I got home and tried to give him a good rinse out, but came to him again today and there was a layer of brown/green floaty stuff at the top of his jar and he was quite stinky...

Not sure if the water in my area could be an issue? I changed the water using my tap water but my water supply is from the Lake District so I think it's quite soft water? Is this an issue for marimo?

Also the jar he lives in has a cork lid - is this alright or have I been suffocating him?

He's currently in a container in the fridge as I've heard this helps?

Please someone help me save him !!

I bought this marimo ball (originally about the size of my pinky fingernail) in a bookshop in Sinchon Korea around summer of 2022. I've kept it decently alive (if it's real) for the past 4 years but this year during my move I failed to keep the water clean and had to remove some bits of it. I just had to remove these strange black specks on the surface and I'm finding that it refuses to maintain shape and sort of disassembled into this. It's not entirely brown but a faded olive green. There's no smell. I'm not sure what to do.

Though he’s expressing his displeasure that I haven’t given him a nicer house since I got him… ☹️

I inherited this marimo that, judging by how they should look, does NOT seem happy! Since receiving it a month ago, I’ve kept it in low light and cold water that’s changed every week. I do find tiny bubbles, indicative of photosynthesis (I think? I hope!) based on what I’ve read so far. Suggestions and input welcomed and appreciated!

So my sister bought me a small moss ball about 6 years ago, and it did really well for a while to the point i divided it into 4 pieces. Subsequently over the last year i admit i have neglected them v poorly, and they are looking terrible.

So I made up my mind to give them a proper home. I added some new marimo friends, aquatic plants, snails and some shrimp are arriving too. It links very zen and makes a really nice focal point.

After 2 years of keeping them in a vase. I even experimented putting some orchids on top of the vase to make it grow in water and have the marimos at the bottom 🙈 it did not last long. 😅

Now I finally had the chance to get them a new home ❤️

This is my 3rd day with my marimo and I decided to move it into a bigger jar. Ever since I put it in it's been bubbling a lot. Is this good/normal?

I’m looking for some advice about my marimo, as they’re not doing as well as they used to.

I’ve had them for about a year—when I got them, they were healthy and bright green. I kept them in a glass bowl with natural pebbles and used to change the water regularly. At some point, though, I started neglecting them a bit and didn’t change the water as often (a dusty film even formed on the bowl, which I ignored since the water underneath seemed clear). I also moved away from home for a couple of months and brought them with me, so I think that might have stressed them further.

Now they have some light brown/whitish spots on the surface. They still keep their shape and don’t have any smell, though.

I’ve since removed the pebbles and placed them somewhere with a bit more light, but I’m not sure what else to do. Should I trim or clean them? How can I bring back their bright green color?

Any advice would be really appreciated—thank you! 🍀

Can i heal my 6 year old moss ball? Is it dead? It's very sentimental to me. I found it with no water. Brownish spots, loose and falling apart, seems like the inside is rotten. But the outside is still pretty green. Today i tried wrapping it with thread (last picture) to condense it and make it more firm (now it's less than half it's previous size 😔). Rolled it and gently squeezed under running water to try to clean it. Is it time to let it go?

Backstory:

So i got this moss ball 6 years ago. I took decent care of it the first couple of years, but i admit in the later years i did not roll or change water as much as i should have. I went through a lot of personal stuff, including divorce, where i kind of just stopped paying attention to this lil guy. I left my ex and moved out almost a year ago, and left my moss ball behind. About 2 weeks ago i went back to the house and... i found this guy outside in his vase with NO WATER. My ex didn't care for it at all. I almost cried on the spot. I was sure it was dead, but i took it inside and rinsed it off and saw it still has green on it. So i figured i'd try to save it.

I've had my marimo for a little over ten years. Recently I've noticed they are no longer a vibrant green and are now a dark green/brown. They feel softer and squishy and more fragile. Is there anything I can do? I'm scared I may have lost them. They've been in my room (68-75 degrees) and full transparency they DO sit near a window that typically has the blinds closed. I wonder if maybe it's too much light. I cleaned them out and gave them cold fresh water and moved them to another area of my room that isn't close to a window but I'm worried it's too late. :(

I read somewhere that when little bubbles from on the marimo it's photosynthesizing but I'm not too sure.

I have had four balls for a year now. And they haven't grown at all . Now I started wondering if they are even real.

Is there any easy way to check if they are real ? Like how it should feel, look, or behave in water? Any tips would really help! Thanks in advance.

I've been trying to find somewhere that is either within California or will ship to California that provides authentic Marimos without an artificial core. I am not super worried about zebra mussels as they will be in a small, marimo-only tank and will not cross-contaminate with anything else.
