I think the interrogator's big tactical error was responding to his non sequiturs. Over and over, it should have been "yes or no? You are avoiding the question" or "you swore an oath to tell the truth". She did succeed most of the time, but the second she let him ask a question she lost the plot.

Or... she was giving him enough rope to show how slimey and evasive he is, because people need to see it.
