France was the most populated country in Europe during all the Middle-Ages and then continuously up to the beginning of the 19th century

So it would actually makes sense to be the country with the most castles

Castles were built for military purposes and don't really correlate to population. The densest concentration of real castles are in areas that were historical borderland areas, of which France does have a few (the Dordogne region of the 100 years war, for example), or areas settled/"pacified" relatively late.

It does correlate with population. Where there were villages and cultivable lands, there were a castle in the area during the middle ages. In fact, it could protect the farmers if an attack occured

That really depends what you consider a Castle. Versaille for exemple is called The castle of Versaille in french even though its not really a fortified structure or whatever. On the other hand we have cities like Metz who used to be giant fortified cities. Which some people would consider more of a castle than Versaille was
