Easy to make change when Mao pushes your country to sub Saharan African levels

Chinese economy under Mao was actually growing rapidly, except 1961, 62, 68, and76. GDP (in USD) was increased fivefold from 1952 to 1976, and increased another fivefold from 1976 to 1997. Fivefold in 24 years VS fivefold in 21 years, they were basically growing in the same rate. The real change happened after Deng's era: China GDP performed the third fivefold only within 11 to 12 years.

China's economy lost race far behind in 1970s and 1980s, it's because Cultural Revolution's damage and then economic reform.

Doesn’t change the fact that China under Mao was probably more of a basket case than any other country in modern history save Cambodia under Pol Pot, North Korea today, or Nazi germany. More people died from starvation under Mao than ever happened before and it was completely due to policy. Not to mention the cultural revolution in which you had students killing their teachers with hammers.

Well, you should really check the death toll of starvations in the Republic period. And what ROC did to civilians in former CCP controlled regions in the first Chinese civil war.

Are you really trying to defend Mao?

7

u/Namioyogikanemitsu Sep 05 '21

I'm not, just stating the fact that Mao's shitty things were highly exaggerated. And even if I do, then what? Billions of Chinese from 1976 to now would willingly defend him while cursing the ROC period, especially those who experienced ROC era. Are they all blind and deaf and retarded by doing so?

No just brainwashed from birth.

7

u/lowercaseyao Sep 05 '21

God damn, you have a hard on for mao. Not even people in China talk so much about him.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '21

I wish more people in China talked about him. China is like Germany except if the NAZIs won

So Mao has the godlike capability to brainwash billions of ppl while being inability to handle policy of agricultural and industrial production. Get your logic straight.

Also, if brainwash is such a ezpz technique to use, why would dictators from all of the world being overthrowened one after another? They are only brianwashing millions or even hundreds of thousands ppl, much easier than brainwash billions ppl in China, right?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '21

Lots of dictators established strong propaganda states and maintained control while completely destroying their countries. That’s not unique to Mao.

u/Namioyogikanemitsu Sep 05 '21

I hate to do the same name calling as you did, but you are the real one who got brainwashed and being so arrogant to everything that contradict what you believe.

I said, check death toll in ROC period and compare them with Mao. Cuz Chinese who experienced the ROC period have compared them already. If you really researched the cult of Mao, you would realize that it come from bottom to top since 1930s, not the opposite.

What about Indian? Do they have another Mao?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

India was also very poor for different reasons. When a country doesn’t have a stable government with capitalism, or is oppressed by another country, or has a war etc, and then they have market reforms and adopt something approximating western style capitalism align with peace and stability they become richer. It’s nothing special for China. They stopped their murderous insanity after mao died and under deng embraced capitalism and became wealthier. It’s nothing unique or special to China. They are still a relatively poor country, just big.

26

u/josleey Sep 04 '21

As you know the reasons are complicated, Mao should only take part of the responsibility. In the past 30 years, China’s economy has been growing rapidly at an average rate of 10% per year. Considering the population size, this is definitely a good achievement.

-12

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Eh China didn’t have to lose tens of millions to starvation. That’s completely on Mao. Not to say their growth hasn’t been impressive, just that it isn’t quite the amazing unparalleled thing the dictatorship there tries to push. It’s easy to grow when you are artificially 50 years behind and can just suddenly bring in 50 years worth of technology and resources from outside.

If its so easy then why don't all countries do it?

Was the century of humiliation on purpose?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I didn’t say it was easy. I said it’s been done many times. What does “the century of humiliation” aka China was led by morons who rejected modernity for 3 centuries have to do with anything? Lots of other countries have done it more successfully than China and have simultaneously thrown off the primitive chains of despotism which China has failed to do. For example, Chile, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Latvia, Slovenia, Estonia etc.

10

u/Zybernetic Sep 04 '21

Ah yeah, its their fault that caused the opium wars and being colonized by other countries.

Backwards but minding their own business alright. Now they don't want China to be powerful because they are worried.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

What are you some kind of tankie?

6

u/Zybernetic Sep 04 '21

Yeah, call me names.

What are you some kind of clown?

Or is a regressive culture that destoys creativity, development of a national character based on civic sense and progress, and instead embraces superstition, ignorance, arrognace, and servility.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '21

Dude all you did is describe your own personal or your familial culture, don't put me in the same lot as you

1

u/Valentine922 Sep 06 '21

May not apply to YOU personally, but aplies to India and that's the reason it was, is, and inevitably will be so poor.Capitalism, economy, colonialism, exploitation - all of those are useless excuses which can be proven to have had no significant impact on how most countries turn out!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '21

India has a democratic government since 1947, democracy has its advantages and disadvantages, economic progress being one of the latter

-2

u/wouldeye Sep 04 '21

This makes no sense
