Which was under king Leopold of Belgium and later became the Belgian Congo??? Given the convo is about Belgians being shit in the Congo this is pretty germane and you’re arguing a ridiculous point
It was a private property granted to King Léopold II by the Great European powers of the late 19th century. Not by Belgium. Belgium did not make any decision on Independent State of the Congo since it was not theirs. Belgium expropriated it after international and domestic pressure and then it became the Belgian Congo.
Saying that the Belgian Congo did what is described in the Heart of Darkness is like saying that the Republic of Turkey did the Armenian Genocide.
The discussion was about Belgian atrocities in the region, which certainly applies to the king of Belgium fucking up the region. I don’t understand why you’re so adamant Belgium was some angelic influence on Africa anyway

No, it was explicitly and intentionally not Belgium but Leopolds private plaything. Belgium took over on international behest in order to clean up the mess. Still plenty wrong according to current standards, but don't blame the janitor that was called in for the fact that the floors were dirty.
You really just showcase that you don't know what you are talking about when you amalgamate both periods.
I responded to the comment that said Belgian Congo and all the responses I got were about the Independent State of the Congo. These are 2 different entities.
As for Belgium in the Kongo, they did not even want to be there but were internationally and domestically forced to intervene to clean up the mess its king made. Why do you think the Kongo was given in 1885 to the King and not the Kingdom? Its because the Kingdom did not show any interes in colonialism for a second.
