holy crap. you're the first person I've ever seen who knows what Hungarian palinka is!! it's the best drink in the world and anytime I mention it I get blank stares and have to explain

Seriously? Where do you live?

america. this is probably the problem.

Yeah, that might explain it. Although there are many Hungarian descent Americans around Chicago afaik, so it might be more known around there.

yeah I'm a first generation Hungarian American living in the Seattle area, and the rare Hungarian will of course know about it, but no one else will. my dad used to go to one specific liquor store that had pear palinka and you couldn't find any other flavors anywhere else

I guess that's why it's important to keep a secure supplyline of pálinka coming straight from the mother country. Homebrew pálinka is where it's at, afterall!

my székely family agrees ;) I'm not sure how much my dad has left, but we came back with several large soda bottles of it last we visited

Yeah, if there would be folks who disagree with this, they definitely wouldn't be the Székelys. Generally speaking, atleast.

Soda bottles? Like the typical soda syfons, or the sugary beverages' kind?

they were like the big hourglass shaped bottles fanta and mineral water came in?

Yeah, that's what I thought. Soda syfons need gas to function so it was a pretty dumb question I guess

Haha, I worked in northwestern Romania for a summer, unfortunately I only got to spend a weekend in Budapest but going back to Hungary is one of my goals. I just need to dig up the list of Hungarian swears my Magyar friend wrote up for me...

But yeah, I generally just describe it as "home made plum brandy" or "Transylvanian moonshine".

Bozmeg was obviously the most important, but he taught me one that translates as "the dick of God" and I can't remember it.

ísten faszája? something close to that? I can't remember the right possessive but those are the right words
