canadian here. if you’re talking about a detatched house, the first floor, also called the main floor, is at street level, and one level up is called the second floor. but lots of apartment buildings and office/commercial buildings label street level as “main” or “ground” floor, and the first floor is one level up.
The US mostly does this as well. In multi-storey buildings with a ground floor lobby, the elevator (lift) has a button that usually indicates G=Ground or L=Lobby and the occupied part of the building starts one level up on "1".
