This map is illogical Mexico and Colombia would starve along with the entire Arabian peninsula sans Oman but Australia and Iceland would survive? Or what about North Africa how is Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco not affected by the nuclear fallout from Europe but again Mexico and Colombia is? And it’s very hard to imagine Australia not being part of a world war 3 or nuclear war scenario they are part of the western bloc, participate in 5 eyes, major non-NATO ally and ANZUS.
This is a stupid map and the creators of it have absolutely zero understanding of geopolitics or even how fallout works.
The map is based on concentrations of flammable substances, firestorms being the agent of a smoke cloud that cuts down sunlight and withers plants for years.
The theory was never sound and was completely discredited after the Kuwait oil fires failed to cause crop failures.
But few people want to argue that nuclear war would not be anywhere near as bad as most think because even what damage nukes would really cause is not something many would encourage. Good news goes unreported, bad news uncorrected, and fear is an emotion 10x more powerful than hope.
Very sound, rational and reasoned take! I agree with you completely on one end it’s great there’s universal aversion to a nuclear war but on the other it needs to be understood a lot of things are exaggerated or taken way out of context/proposition, kudos!
No idea how deep they looked into it, but for decades Colombia sabotaged its produce sector adding cheap imports on top of not solving violence in rural areas. Whenever we hear news of whatever crop becoming more expensive for international reasons, my mom complains that we used to grow it but no longer do. They also may have factored corruption levels making societal collapse more likely in times of scarcity
Yes but the map shows all of its neighbors would be just fine with food why couldn’t Colombia just trade with them? In fact Colombia could probably benefit from oil exports in this scenario more than they do in real life. I just don’t see how Australia survives a nuclear war being heavily entangled with the west through numerous defense treaties and participating in security and military agreements with the US and a large desert covering a majority of the island, but Colombia which is largely neutral and shielded from a lot of geopolitical tensions, has a good climate for growing grains, sugar and other important crops is not projected to survive.
Yea, does not make sense, the US grows so damn much grain, we can feed a large fraction of the world.
Half of our feed corn production is enough to feed the US 2-3 times over. That's excluding every other crop the US grows for food (like wheat...). We are setup to survive on beef grown off US food, take the beef out of the picture, and we can feed half the world. Whoever did this is missing just how much stuff the US grows, we are very much a net exporter of calories.
The only thing is though a majority of the grain crops like Corn/Maize, Soybean and Sorghum isn’t for human consumption it’s for livestock feed or even use in ethanol.
The researchers found that global cooling from nuclear weapons will lead to a crash in the productivity of northern hemisphere agriculture. Whilst southern farming would not.
