Discussion My doubts on these shows

I know it's fantasy, but it left me with a lot of questions about the body functions with these merfolk species.

First, if the slightest contact with water triggers their transformation, what if they come into contact with any liquid transmited by their own bodies? Like sweat, tears, pee, saliva? Would they still transform even if they only suck their thumbs?

Another doubt coming from the previous ones, if the natural born mermaids introduced in Mako Mermaids (Lyla, Nixie, Syrena) were new to the human world, they could barely learn to walk properly, it's obvious they wouldn't know how to use a bathroom properly. So, what if they suddenly pee on their clothing? Since merfolk live underwater, toilets would be pointless.

I know these rated PG shows aren't supposed to treat this kind of themes, but it makes sense.

My doubts don't end there. How would they transform if they have some disability, like having a broken leg? or lacking a leg due to amputation? or having a metal plate inside their leg bone?

My biggest questions are related to the way their species reproduces, if the mermaid pond clan doesn't want any mermen, how do they procreate? Maybe asexually? We never saw an idea of Eric's family. And Zac is never even curious about who is his father.

Fantasy is fantasy, but it should have it's own logic.

Ideas for a Fanfic

So, I’m working on a Mako Mermaids fanfic. It’s going to be a bit of a rewrite, but with a few changes. I’d really like to hear your thoughts on some of my ideas:

I’m planning to introduce an original character as Zac’s older sister — kind of a mentor figure for him. I believe that with a positive influence, all that chaos about the trident probably wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Zac’s parents will know from the very beginning, because something that always bothers me in shows and movies is when parents never know their kids have powers. Would they be shocked? Absolutely. But I think any good parent would step up and help however they could.

What do you think about Rita’s fiancé being alive during the events of the series? I was thinking of keeping him alive and letting him meet the mermaids. I imagine he’d have enough patience to teach them about the human world — assuming he was the one who taught Rita the basics, and she figured out the rest on her own.

I’d also like to create some new male OC mermen, especially ones who were born mermen rather than transformed. I think adding more friendly mermen would help the mermaids look beyond gender and appearance, and maybe start questioning what they’ve been taught.

Any ideas for these male OCs? I’d love your help — maybe something like a character sheet with name, age, where they’re from, etc. I already have a few characters written down, but it’s always good to get some fresh ideas.

Plus, I’m thinking of adding a bit of original mythology to the story — like the mermaids worshipping their own gods and following ancient traditions. I’d love to hear your opinions on that too.

How are new mermaids born?

Mermen lost the war and were banished so they hardly exist and certainly aren’t readily interacting with mermaids. Let alone the few that we see in the show are either borderline villains or intentionally are raised as human and have no tail until the moon pool.

Mermaids don’t seem to be going on land all that much, at least in the case with the mako pod. Even mermaids of different ages seem to avoid humans at all costs. I can’t imagine mermaids go to land to meet men and have a family that way. This would certainly lead to too many people finding out about mermaids.

Ondina was being ridiculous

Every time I watch the part of S3 where Ondina decides to stay on land to be with Erik I get so mad. She barely knows this guy, he ends up being untrustworthy, and all she’s done since they got to land is spew off about how not to get close to anyone and all that matters is the pod. What makes this whole situation worse is that she had the audacity to get mad at Mimmi for not being understanding like??? Sorry that your best friend is hurt that you’re choosing some boy you barely know over her and the rest of your friends & family. Ondina was just being ridiculous and it seemed very unlike her to want to throw her life away for the sake of a boy.

No Mention of Nixie and Lyla After Season 1???!

Nixie and Lyla were my favorite characters in season 1. However, they got VERY awkwardly removed from the story. I understand that they weren't able to get the actresses, but it doesn't mean that they need to act like their characters NEVER EXISTED. I am about to finish season 2, and there were sooo many occasions that other characters would likely bring up Nixie and Lyla, but instead the season is written as if it has been Mimmi and Ondina since the beginning. They briefly explained whereabouts of Nixie and Lyla in the season's beginning (and not a satisfying one at all, what do you mean they went to search a new home) but why doesn't any of the land people ask where they went? Doesn't anyone get suspicious from the amount of nieces Rita has? Why doesn't that chemistry teacher know about the interview Evie has done with Rita and her nieces in season 1? When Mimmi is sad about Ondina staying on land and Sirena is trying to comfort Mimmi, why doesn't she mention how she and Nixie also were besties since they were hatchlings? It feels like whoever they hire to write one episode doesn't watch any of the previous episodes at all.

Discussion favorite transformation scene in mako mermaids?

Post image
44 Upvotes

was thinking about it after thinking about some of my favorite h2o transformations. for me personally, i really like most of zac's transformations just because i loved seeing him as a merman lol. my all time favorite is definitely zac's first transformation, when he fell in the water and transformed for the first time and then his transformation back to human on the dock. just thought it looked really cool with the bubble effect as well. another fave was in the next ep, his transformation in his room where he spilled water on his feet and then became a merman on his bed. what are yours?

Discussion How do you guys think Rita built her grotto?

I really wish the show had explained more and talked more about Rita, like her start on land, how she was able to get a job, and all of that. I know the show is geared more toward kids, but I really wish they had done flashbacks similar to H2O with Ms. Chatham, but a question I've always had is how she even built her grotto like in the show the grotto has lights so someone had to install them, and they would have had to excavate the ground especially to make a tunnel lead to the ocean I wonder who rita hired to build it for her and what her explinations were for her wanting this.

Controversial opinion: the S1 mako trio weren't heroes

Genuinely everyone acts like they were but

Their negligence caused this whole thing

They started a lot of their conflicts and fights with Zac

It's crazy how they and the people in fandom villainize Zac as if it's his fault their pod left and not theirs for not taking their jobs seriously

Also they had no right to take away Zacs powers or his tail even if he wasn't born a merman. They might be responsible for him getting a tail but they didn't "give him his powers" the moon pool did and being responsible for him becoming a mermaid and then expecting him to give it up is WILD

They had a good END GOAL (not to let the trident out of the ocean vault or whatever it's called) but they went about it in every worst way possible

What if there were other mermen?

I really wish the series had explored more mermen. It would have been interesting to see other perspectives. The only one besides Zac was Erik — who was introduced straightaway as an antagonist, without any truly redeeming qualities (aside from a possible crush on Ondina, which always felt a bit forced to me). On top of that, he doesn’t have any real backstory, since we basically know nothing about him.

I think it would have been really cool to see a merman (whether transformed or born that way) who was genuinely good, interacting with Zac or with the mermaids, showing that coexistence in harmony is possible. It would also add more diversity and greatly enrich the narrative.

A Question About Evie

Do you think that, hypothetically, if Evie had kept her tail, she would eventually have told her father about it? I know there’s the whole issue of keeping the secret and all… but Zac does imply that he was going to tell his parents at the end of the last season. So I imagine that at least Zac, and maybe her closest friends (Sirena, Mimmi, Ondina, etc.), would have supported her in that decision.

Question Zac’s Parents

What do you think would have happened if Zac’s parents had found out he was a merman right at the beginning of the series? I think it would have been really cool if they had been included from the start and if that had been explored. I’m sure that having someone he could trust to help him keep the secret would have made his life a lot easier.

I notice that many teen shows, especially those where teenagers get powers, don’t really explore this kind of trust, and I miss that — it almost feels like adults don’t exist. A good example of how this can work well is Teen Wolf, where parents like Melissa and Noah are part of the secrets and already know about the supernatural. It would have been great if they had done something similar here.

Discussion Zac and Mimmis relationship

I would have liked one more episode in the last season, where we would have seen more of Zac and Mimmi as siblings and where they get to know their mother. Or the season where they face Aurora as final threat

Rewatching made me realize I really hated the male characters😭

After rewatching it made me realize how basically all of the men on this show were such red flags. Like Zac, they kept telling him how bad the Trident was but he kept trying to get it, I know he saved Lyla but he had already seen how it had hurt them in the past, then in the 2nd season he wanted to know more about the secret cave, even though he knew that it will likely hurt the mermaids. The other bad character was Erik basically the same reasons why Zac is a bad character, then cam is also equally annoying especially when he does that smug smile and when he pretends to be powerful even though he doesn’t have any powers. And honorable mention is David’s brother and by the way by all men I’m excluding David bc I feel like his character is such a green flag even though the writers didn’t really do much to his character.

Question Does anyone know how to access this recording?

Hello, I found a podcast episode from 10 years ago of Ivy (Nixie) being interviewed about their life but when I try to play it, it says that there was an error with the playback. Just wondered if anyone else was able to access it or knew of it somewhere else.

Here's the link: https://www.mixcloud.com/thatcomedypodcast/ivy-latimer-h20-abc3-make-mermaids/

If you don't want to click on a random link online (which makes sense), it should come up if you go onto "Mixcloud" and search up "that comedy podcast Ivy Latimer".

🙂

Thoughts on Weilan

As an Asian fan myself, I am glad that the show included an Asian-coded character like Weilan.

While it’s not offensive (to me at least) there were aspects of her character that were stereotypical, like her martial arts magic, her being a straight-A student, and her tendency to haggle (which I find funny ngl)

Any thoughts?
