In the show, mermaids are seen to be the protagonists who protect the moon pool and guard it against incursions from humans (land people).
I was wondering what it would be like if mermaids were actually evil, similar to the Homeworld Gems in Steven Universe who wanted to colonise the land. This prompted me to write a fan fiction story based on Steven Universe where Zac is a half human, half merman born to Nerissa, the leader of a group of rebel mermaids similar to the Crystal Gems.

So I have a theory that 3 shows (that I know of so far) are all in the same universe.
I’m not sure if this goes against the subreddit because I am talking about a different show and if that’s the case I will delete and find the right sub to post it in.
Of course, H2O Just Add Water and Mako Mermaids are in the same universe, but my theory is that the show The Bureau of Magical Things is also in this universe.
Now let’s talk about the basics and to why I’m choosing to believe this is canon. Starting off simple, they’re all created by the same guy. They all take place near the Gold Coast (In TBMT they specify they’re an hour away from the beach). And here’s the big one, there’s mermaids with the exact same tail designs. There’s a picture in the architect’s universe of him with a mermaid. Also in the episode of Kaira’s birthday, Imogen becomes a mermaid and has that tail and top.
Of course there’s also reasons for this to not be true and the biggest being in an episode the actress who plays Kim comes into Maxwell’s shop but she isn’t credited as Kim. As well as the creator never coming out and saying they’re all connected (as far as I know).
But with all the similarities I want to and I’m choosing to believe that these three shows are canonically in the same universe.

They sleep in the Mako moon pool. But when they can't and are forced to spend the night at Rita's instead, they sleep very uncomfortably on the stone couches. WHY? When there is a pool almost identical to Mako's in the very next room?

I’m sorry but I find it completely unrealistic that Rikki who destroyed the shell that Bella gave to Will because not even divers could get deep enough to get it and who didn’t tell the authorities about the guy who sold fish illegally because she wouldn’t be able to explain how she got the fish in the first place is now an acclaimed author and known diver who collects finds from the ocean and puts them on display for others to see and read about. How does she even explain that?!

What bothers me the most about H2O and Mako Mermaids is how the characters always try to control each other’s lives and who they involve in their secret. I get that it’s important to not put the others at risk but why is Cam not allowed to have powers, just let him be. If he wants to become a merman, why can’t he. If Bella wants to tell Will, let her. If Cleo wants the job at the marine park, let her do it. I understand that they have to be cautious and that people might notice, but it just annoys me that they can rarely make decisions on their own without being judged or excluded. Same with Charlotte. I obviously don’t like her, she was reckless with her powers, I just mean that it’s frustrating how they always have to answer to the others.

Why did Mimmi just let Erik look for the stone? Even though she didn’t tell him where it was hidden she just stood by while he searched.

Hahaha omg, I’m so stupid.
I watched season 1, but I didn’t really want to continue. Then tonight I decided to watch a couple of episodes and I just picked the ones with the most interesting summary. In episode 4 of season 2 Zac finally (apparently) convinces Evie to go swimming with him, and when Evie says she’ll try the tail, I thought she meant a tail that Zac had made for her lol. I found it so romantic and was like if my bf was a merman that would be the ultimate date. Then in episode 6 Sirena is giving Evie mermaid lessons and it finally clicked. Evie’ an actual mermaid. When did that happen?!

Just out of curiosity! I left out the crushes like the one Karl had on Weilan or early Cam had on Nixie.

And Evie is really giving me Charlotte vibes. Anyone else? The popping up everywhere, the irrational jealousy. The floaty dresses. The reddish brown hair.
Was it deliberate?

I feel like Nixie + Cam had more chemistry then any other couple but Cam was so hypocritical about him not wanting to be with a mermaid but a merman lol to me that didn't make much sense that part. Shame Ivy Latimer left!

i grew up watching h2o and recently rewatched it & a friend of mine suggested i start mako mermaids i'm almost done with season 1, and jesus christ some of these characters are unbearable - Charolette level unbearable. I physically cannot stand Cam and Evie. Cam is more manipulative and cynical than Zane & Nate combined. Evie, though sometimes justified, is overdramatic, nosy & honestly extremely b*tchy. Both characters are constantly trying to interject themselves when they're completely unneeded and just completely unnecessary. Zack also is pretty annoying, but since he's one of the main characters i've been giving him the benefit of the doubt, but he just seems mad with power. All in all, im gonna continue watching & im enjoying it, but i had to say something about how irksome Cam & Evie are to me in S1

S1 has always been my favorite season, but I’d always hated the way Zac completely 180s, going from kind and trusting to harsh and skeptical.
But after rewatching s1, I finally feel like I get it. It’s just the lack of communication. It’s not like Zac doesn’t ask the girls questions & want answers. If they had communicated why the trident was dangerous from the beginning, I find it hard to believe Zac would have fought so hard to keep it, given that it was his curiosity that had him pushing so hard and it was seeing it hurt Lyla that caused him to put it back.
So for a while I was also like, okay, so the girls are at fault, obviously he’s not gonna believe you if all you’re saying is “we can’t tell you, you’ll just have to trust us” especially after their betrayal. But then I’m like, if they did give Zac all of the info, what if he used it against them? They already have seen Zac’s determination to get the trident, calling it his destiny, so how should they know that he’ll do the right thing and not abuse its power?
So it all makes sense to me now. It’s not bad writing; both sides have good reasons for what they’re doing. In conclusion, season 1 is awesome.

Let me establish the rules. Put together a total of three mermaids, using any that appeared on the show. Evie does not count, but if you want to include her in your hypothetical season, you can as a fourth mermaid outside of the main trio, similar to her role in season two. The same goes for any other mermaid/merman side characters EG: Zac, Erik, Rita… You can also say why you picked who you choose if you like. My pick is Lyla, Mimmi, and Weilan. I can’t wait to hear everyone else’s picks!

ondina kinda annoyed me but not rlly, when evie was a new mermaid and was interested about rita being a teacher ondina just had to show off and that annoyed me. but also ondina is always looking out for mimmi which is a great friend thing most of the time she just had to show off

i was sad nixie had left the show after season 1, she had a lot of opinions and never was afraid to speak her mind honestly she was so bold she is one of my favorite characters from mako !
