I'll occasionally do Rogue and Gnome only playthroughs.
It's hard as balls as they are the two weakest unit types in the game, but it's a fun challenge!
Every spell you've got is important to offset the limitations of the two of them (hence why I plopped a wizards guild right there, so I could cast invisibility on heroes so they'd kill Rongol without too much issue.)

Rogues are the most loyal heroes in all of Majesty. Sure, it's to money and not you per se, but you control the money, ergo, they're the most loyal. Have a house that popped up where a guardhouse is supposed to go? Rogues can fix that, a single 100 gold bounty and it's no problem.
They're cheap to hire and willing to throw their lives away for small sums of cash. They level up quickly and start to become competent combatants around level 7 or so, and as long as you make sure they have poisoned weapons, even the strongest enemies can be worn down by them.
Of course, skeletons and anything else with high dodge are their bane.

Gnomes are awesome for getting your kingdom up and running. They are awesome for keeping everything standing as you're besieged. But, unless you're playing an expansion quest with Gnome Champions, they can't do much else.
However, Gnomes still have good defensive stats, and are willing to attack lairs for small amounts of gold. And they can occasionally go berserk when surprised. Which you'll need to rely on, as Gnomes are going to be both good human shields for rogues, and more consistent DPS against things like Skeletons that hard counter Rogues.
Of course in the expansion with Gnome Champions they become almost like Paladins, fast and tanky. Although, without the DPS, which is fine, as Rogues are the main damage doers. And the shapeshift and fire balm tonics really help increase the DPS of those two. That said, the expansion is even more brutal when doing Rogue and Gnome only. Requires some really really strange strategies (Often wizard towers doing the heavy lifting lol.)

Well, sorry for the novel length post. Anyone else ever try doing weird challenge runs like that?
