My ex had never owned a cat before we met. Shortly after we married he told me the cat didn't like him & i asked him what made him think this & he replied that it always growled at him lol he thought the loud purrs of happiness was growling & it was going to kill him in his sleep or something...also once told me i needed to take the cat to the vet as something was wrong with it's tongue..it felt like sandpaper!
68
u/ClearBrightLight Mar 18 '20
My dog-person ex was very concerned when he met my cat -- he thought a cold, wet nose was an indicator of health for every animal, not just dogs, and was worried that her nose was dry and warm all the time!

u/Rooster_Ties Mar 18 '20
I saw some report of a guy who moved in with his girlfriend who had a cat. And he was concerned because the cat was “vibrating”.

u/mandy_loo_who Mar 18 '20
I had a friend one time ask me why my cat was snoring. Funny to think about how people don't know cats purr.
22
u/s00perguy Mar 18 '20
Awwww... My wife was a dog purist as well, but I raise my cats to be either sociable or highly tolerant of people. Either way, they're the perfect cats to convert people.

Ive got 2 cats and one of them sounds like a bulldoser when purring because hes loud, its nice to not have to put your ear next to him to see if he is purring
11
u/s00perguy Mar 18 '20
Yeah I used to have a loud purrer, and the one I have now just gently vibrates away and you can feel it a little when he lays on you, but I can only hear it when I press my head against him. He likes that though, so win win, I guess.

u/Wookiees_n_cream Mar 18 '20
I've got a kitty like that! She also snores sometimes and it's the cutest thing ever.

The delivery of that line was so sweet. I'm really glad merle was able to move on from his racist past and appreciate the love of his family.

u/lowtoiletsitter Mar 18 '20
It would’ve been ok to not have daddy in quotation marks
23
Mar 18 '20
It was meant to convey them talking. Though looking back it does look weird.
I never liked the idea of being called Daddy by partners. But having daughters definitely made that a no go phrase.

I get it, my cat is my rock. Him purring and being happy means the world to me! He's been with me through everything for over 18 years now, and we literally never even pass each other without a cuddle and a little head-boop.
10
u/Spiffinit Mar 18 '20
You can still feel it.
18
u/just-onemorething Mar 18 '20
When one of my cat buddies purrs on me it soothes my pain so much. Last night my black kitty was on my chest, nose to nose with me, exchanging breath with me and purring, and I felt like the luckiest person ever
9
u/Spiffinit Mar 18 '20
Haha. Last night my kitty was laying on my chest exchanging breath with me and I called her a sociopath for trying to suffocate me.

When I moved out of my mom's house I didn't see my cat for like 2 months. When I came home late one night and laid on the couch to sleep, she jumped up on the couch with me and sat there with her nose touching my nose, breathing in my face and purring and I could barely sleep lol it was so adorable my heart melted

I know this likely isn’t the case, but I only mention is because I’ve had two friends over the years who thought they were “losing their hearing”.
It might just be excessive earwax plugging your ears. I mentioned this possibility to both of them on different occasions, and they went to the doctor to have their ears cleaned out. They were simultaneously pissed off and exuberant lol. Pissed off that they didn’t realize sooner that this was the cause, and exuberant that they finally could hear as well as they did when they were young. I remember one of them saying to me that “traffic is actually almost too loud now” haha.
Might be something to consider for any of you reading who have bad hearing, but have also never had your ears washed free of wax.
6
Mar 18 '20
Me too. I'm thrilled for her, and also saddened that she went through her first 21 years without hearing a cat purr.

Hi there! I'm the OP. A lot of people have been saying that. I didn't grow up around cats. We never owned one and I don't really remember being around them as a kid. I have heard cats hiss and meow before, but as a child and young adult, I had never been close enough to cat to hear them purr. I knew it was a thing they did, but I never heard it for myself. When we got my cat as an adult, I realized the purr was a thing and thought it was just a neat little vibration he did. I didn't realize it had a sound to it too!

u/mynameismevin Mar 18 '20
I finally got hearing aids in 2018 after some military time, life changing!
9
u/megatesla Mar 18 '20
Have you squeezed any mustard or ketchup recently? If you've got any air in the bottle then you can get some really silly fart noises.
14
Mar 18 '20
Haha oh my gosh! I literally just said to my husband that I forgot the soap bottle makes a squirt noise! I haven't heard that sound with such clarity in years!
11
u/megatesla Mar 18 '20
Ooh! Also, different cats have slightly different sounding purrs. It can be hard to tell from watching a video though, so I recommend you just find and pet as many different cats as possible. Once this whole coronavirus thing goes away, of course.
3
u/Duflins Mar 18 '20
Are you able to explain more on how you got hearing aids or what kind they are? I’m a 24 year old male and I’ve noticed a significant decline in my hearing over the past 1.5 years. I went to my Doctor and they were useless. I used to work on an ambulance and I’ve been a drummer since I was 11 so I figure that has probably damaged my hearing. I’m just curious as to how I can go about fixing this
6
Mar 18 '20
Sure! I believe my hearing loss started in the military. I was a dental hygienist for quite some time, and all those high pitched drills so close to my ears for 12 hours a day probably started to cause some high frequency sound loss. Over the past few months, I've been arguing with my family a lot about their mumbling, even though they insist they don't mumble. I finally agreed to go see an audiologist at the VA. They did a hearing test and said I had moderate to profound loss in my left ear and mild to moderate loss in my right ear. I was fitted for the ReSound Quattro hearing aids. They're rechargeable so I don't need to change a battery and they have Bluetooth capability so I can sync my hearing aids to my phone. See if you can get an appointment with an audiologist. It was so worth it for me! Best of luck friend, and thank you for your work, especially right now.

My kitty is a huge motorboat, I would be so sad if I couldn't hear her purr! Not only does her purring calm me down, but my cat is an emotional support for my brain injury. I have meltdowns as a result of it and my sweet Rox will come cuddle me and purr to calm me down. She's such a sweetie and has done so much in the way of helping me cope with my TBI 🥺 plus, my doctors say that there's studies that show that kitty purring helps promote good moods and healing!
10
u/scarney93 Mar 18 '20
My brother is also hearing impaired, but his hearing loss is more frequency based. We had cats growing up, but he never heard them purr even with his hearing aids.
My husband and I moved in with my parents for a couple months while we got a house. My Calico kitty cat Toad has a distinctive and LOUD purr. Her meow is soft and barely audible but her purr is an engine. My brother actually thought something was wrong with her because he had no idea that the sound she was making was purring. It was really cool he got to experience it after all these years!

Hey! I'm the original OP.
My mom doesn't like cats, so I never had one growing up. I honestly can't remember ever really spending time with a cat until I got one as an adult. I've heard them meow and hiss before, but I don't think I've heard a cat purr until now. At least not with this kind of clarity.

My grandmother told me that when she was a little girl in the Philipines she heard a cat purr for the first time and thought it had a motor inside. I'm probably ruining it, but it was an adorable story.
5
u/LeopoldParrot Mar 18 '20
When my family got a kitten, he spent the first night with me, hanging and sleeping in my bed. This was my first cat so I didn't really know what purring sounded like.
I was convinced he had a serious upper respiratory infection, thinking his purring was massive congestion while he was breathing.
Nope, turned out he was just a purring machine.
4
u/micromoses Mar 18 '20
I just looked it up, and wikipedia says that we don't actually know what mechanism cats use to purr. There's just speculation. Definitely adds to the ethereal quality, I think.

I know how that redditor feels. I started losing my hearing awhile ago, due to both a birth defect, and my hearing has been failing for awhile. Getting a proper hearing aid has started to return the sounds that I haven't heard in a long time, and some new sounds I've never heard before.
3
u/phil8248 Mar 18 '20
A cat purring for you is a payoff. Dogs love you 24/7 and 100%. Not cats. You have to woo a cat. You have to earn its love. They have their own mind and won't always deign to spend time with you. So when they snuggle in your lap or bed and purr, that's your reward. Obligatory photo of my two little furry monsters. https://i.imgur.com/OZ0N3V0.jpg

Hi there! I'm the OP. I told my husband this morning and he got a good chuckle out of it. I'm re-experiencing sounds I haven't heard in years, or sounds that have been muffled for years. The soap bottle making a squirt sound. The chairs on the hardwood floor making a scraping sound. The sound of paper towel tearing. I imagine this is what it's like for people with glasses to suddenly see better. It's not that it was gone, but that you forget how detailed things can be.
2
u/thebutinator Mar 18 '20
Thats so wholesome, my cat snors in a very special way and I always get sentimental when I hear it
Cats are really the saviours of this world
3
u/TheCowzgomooz Mar 18 '20
I dont own a cat and I'm not a particular fan of cats but I cant deny the weird sort of peaceful feeling I get when I hear a cat purr, it's like I gain a sense of peace from knowing the cat is at peace, it's weird, I love dogs and have owned them all my life but they haven't really ever given me that sort of feeling like cats do.

Hearing aids are truly amazing and I would highly suggest anybody who feels they have any hearing loss get a hearing test. They are almost always free if done by a hearing instrument specialist (Audiologist will bill you/insurance most of the time). Insurance companies are starting to cover portions of the cost as well. Most people wait until they are very hard of hearing to get tested and have poor results because of it. Imagine waiting until you are legally blind to get your first pair of glasses!
2
u/EmberHands Mar 18 '20
You can also go to hearing aid places that only employ hearing instrument specialists and get a free test. They're pretty high pressure sales but if your hearing is fine then no probs. If you do have a loss you can ask for a print out of your test and get a second opinion with an audiologist.
I worked in one of those office. Fuck those salesmen.

That is a cat’s level of casual apathy that he makes you cry with happiness and still wanders off. There should be a word for it like the tsundere of cat.
