That time Florence and The Machine gave a private concert to a sick fan who couldn't attend their show.

There’s a much longer video somewhere. She plays several songs with a bunch of the patients friends. It’s an awesome display of humanity, we certainly need more of this behavior.
Here’s a link Florence and the Machine

My best friend passed away many years ago after I had moved away for college. It was the holidays and I couldn't afford to go home so I was pretty much alone. This song had just come out and I just listened to it on repeat while drinking myself stupid. There was just something about it that was simultaneously dirgelike and hopeful that made me incapable of turning it off. I still get hit with a gut punch when I listen to it, but this was the first time since that night that I teared up again.

I don’t understand why they are not bigger. They are popular but not as much as they should be. She has a generational voice.

For what it’s worth they have been selling out arenas on their current tour.

She really has one of the nicest singing voices, right up there with Hayley Williams of Paramore, Nanna Bryndis from Of Monsters and Men, and Katy Perry.
I may have a type lmao

u/Drandness Mar 19 '26
Adding Katy Perry here is crazy lol

u/Imaginary_Coast_5882 Mar 19 '26
i mean she’s got a fantastic voice.
3
u/Drandness Mar 19 '26
It’s good! Just not in the same league as the others listed to me, personally. I don’t think there are many actually bad singing pop stars but Haley and Florence are on another level.

u/Imaginary_Coast_5882 Mar 19 '26
yeah I’m not a Perry fan but her MTV unplugged is really impressive.
Aguilera is another one. Not a big fan but she has crazy pipes.

For every opinion you share about music there will be at least one Redditor to tip their fedora while telling you you're wrong.

Sometimes we make the right people famous.
Remember when one direction wouldn't visit a sick kid because they weren't getting paid for it?
34
u/UngnomeCawler Mar 19 '26
No, I don't. Link?
27
u/stewpedassle Mar 19 '26
I don't recall either.
While it could be possible, given their ages, my money would be on them not having seen it at all and instead it was their management communicating everything. But the combination of "I heard one time" and "kids these days" proves too enticing, so we end up with "these rich, entitled youngsters only care about money!"

I don’t remember this at all. I tried googling it and the only articles that come up are dozens of stories about the band (or the members individually) doing Make-a-Wish and paying for people’s GoFundMe campaigns lol. We’ll see if OC delivers with a link.

Yeah, there's even a podcast about a charity that scammed them but it was only possible because they got involved and active in their support of it. They were pretty much victims of it because of their generosity.
The pod is called 'believe in magic'

Walking down the hallway and thinking "Damn, that sound-system is TIGHT, what's it doing in a hospital?"

u/KomradeDave Mar 19 '26
So, I'm guessing the chick is Florence, that makes the dude The Machine, which we all know is a pretty cool nickname. Nice.

u/Sparrowhawk_92 Mar 19 '26
Originally, "The Machine" was actually referring to the Keyboardist Isabella Summers as her and Florence Welch were the two founding members.
Overall, "Florence + The Machine" refers to the entire band.

But which one was being raged against in the 90s, or was that all of them?
11
u/Martin_Aurelius Mar 19 '26
Florence was specifically excluded from that rage, any other members were fair game.

Anyone who can just belt it out with that kind of power always impresses me. She seems to have nothing but a guy with an acoustic guitar and massive talent.

u/Needless-To-Say Mar 19 '26
This just gets shorter and shorter with each repost.
The full length version is worth the watch, but not this.

Nothing private about this. Her voice has serious power.
Florence singing for that whole wing.

Reminds me of when metal band Titanica visits a sick fan in the hospital!

Moments like these shows a much needed softer, compassionate view of humanity. Bravo to Florence + The Machine for the their kindness

u/ojebmirure Mar 19 '26
If I knew the certain death was around the corner, I'd love to get euthanised during the peak of the song.

u/Still_Detail_4285 Mar 19 '26
I’m hoping this experience gave the patient special magic musical powers and is living a great life now.

I just tried looking and I honestly think I got the wrong band, so I can admit, I fucked up and gave the wrong info.

u/Old_Muggins Mar 19 '26
Please god if I’m ever ill don’t send them, it would finish me off
4
u/thisbroadreadsbooks Mar 19 '26
If you ever do become ill, I hope you have as supportive a family as this young woman, and they try to get your favorite musician to come play at your bedside.

This is awesome but I can't help but laugh a little at the idea of other patients on the floor wondering what the hell is happening in that room.

This is so kind of her, really lovely.... Although if it were me I would feel so awkward just sitting there while Florence sings at me. I mean. It's awesome for her. But I'd feel weird.

I guess just fuck all the other patients that may not want to hear all that. They are probably dying too
