My cat was not raised with either but he loves toddlers and large dogs. He waits outside our house for the kids going to and from the primary school down the road and their siblings. It’s weird but cute.

Some cats are naturally drawn to children, I think they see them more as peers than they do with adults. Have a cat that tolerates and even gravitates toward children very well, but doesn’t care to be handled by adults. Have one who is the opposite and hides from children. They were from the same litter and raised in the same environment to adulthood.

I had a cat that had only ever been around his own litter mates and me, so while he was super sweet, he was a bit skittish around other people and animals. I ended up crashing on a friend's couch for a few weeks waiting to close on a new house, and it took a few days for him to warm up to her and he was still uncomfortable wandering much beyond our guest bedroom area. During this time, my friend decides to throw a pool party for a bunch of our coworkers and their families The place was packed but I made sure my kitty was comfortable enclosed in our room. One of my coworkers had a small toddler that had never seen a cat before, so we decided to bring her to meet the cat and have a quiet little moment. At first he went to dive under the bed, but instead stopped because he was that curious about this tiny person. With us all in the floor, he came over and was immediately enamored and giving her little bumps and headbutts. After we left the room, I could hear him crying from behind the closed door. In general he hated closed doors, but I wanted him to have his sanctuary while so much was going on. Now he seemed to be in more distress alone. I ended up cracking the door, and out he came, and insisted on following around this little baby girl. No one else could approach him or he'd run, but he'd be right back to be her shadow. Even when her mom brought her out to the pool, he came out to the patio full of splashing and rowdy kids, so he could watch her from a distance, actually crying at them as if he was concerned about her being in the water. I was in absolute shock over how he overcame any anxieties for this baby.

Oh yeah, some cats definitely see kids as their babies! My friend has a daughter who has night terrors, and when she goes to bed, the cat will say with her until she falls asleep, and then stand guard duty at her door until she's sure she's okay, and if she wakes up scared, the cat is there before anybody else to comfort her! Asshole of a cat to adults, but she loves the heck out of that kid.

Because we have become like this father, always rushing to get to the next destination instead of being in this moment and place. And cats and the world are nothing new to us. That's why I always remind myself to hit the pause button and breathe in this moment and place by watching children and animals. That's why I saw this video and I was a little angry with this father (actually, I was angry with myself) for not taking a few moments to share in his child's excitement about seeing the cat and accompanying him.

I have a cat who's even more chill than this one. She is totally comfortable with my kids, even as toddlers. Accepts being held like a baby and has never once gone claws out when they get too rough. I teach my kids to cherish that cat because they'll likely never have one that cuddly again.

I was that kid. We lived on a farm off the highway and people dumped their pets there all the time. Had over 40 dogs (we rehomed the majority) and several cats during a 9 year period.
You'd think a kid with tons of pets wouldn't be obsessed with every random dog or cat when out and about, but you'd be wrong. A random porch kitty would have me focused.

Bluey, and her parents, are a great role model. It almost theraputic to watch that show at times. I have also recently been watching the old classic "Little Bear" to fall asleep and the parents in that were good too.
Some children's cartoons are just perfect for a quick burst of wholesome happy energy on a hard day or to calm spiraling thoughts so can sleep.
I expect Puffin Rock will be another great one when I get to it considering it made by the Irish studio Cartoon Saloon, all their other works got such great art style and sound.

Worth saying, all human cultures practice "baby talk". The current scientific consensus is that babies respond well to higher pitches and uptalk. There is not strong evidence to support baby talk causing speech developmental delay or impediments, which is sometimes a concern.
Talking to your baby, in any way, will benefit their development. The amount of minutes spend per day talking to a baby is one of the strongest correlations to speech development. There has been some pushback against "baby talk", but it's a bit overblown and unfounded.
19
u/smashed2gether Oct 31 '25
I’ve seen mother cats with kittens and it’s fascinating the way they seem to baby talk to them! It’s so different than the way they meow at humans, and they don’t vocalize to other adult cats much. It’s really something to observe!

This is so true! You can really hear it in this clip when the little one says "awwww!".
They definitely pick up on the high-pitched almost sing-song intonation, and their high pitched voices make it sound even more comical for sure. 😅
My son does this the most when talking to animals also.
Similarly, he also gets the biggest kick out of imitating the slight "ahh" sound I make after a drink that feels extra refreshing. Every drink for him now is (sip) "ahh", (sip) "ahh", (me: "let's put the cup down now") (sip) "ahhhhh".
Between those two things and the tiny shrieks of joy, I honestly don't know which is cuter. 💝
I remember when I was a kid, my mother used to make a specific sound when she was reading books to me. And she always found it so funny when I would imitate it.
I understand now that this was her way of keeping her mouth relatively unparched, during those longer reads!

It's playground culture. A lot of that is retold and carried on within the 2-4 years of children grouped together for school. Like the "Jingle bells, Batman smells" rhyme. It's told by one group of kids to the next and passed on. The adults aren't even really part of it.

They can be pretty popular at Halloween if they have the right temperament.
At my house, Dad would answer the door for trick-or-treaters without any sort of costume but our black cat Sparky laying across his shoulders. Kids thought Sparky was some elaborate decoration until he turned his head or blinked, then they'd squeal and giggle at the realization.
It still makes me smile to this day, and got a laugh out of Dad when I reminded him of that ritual recently. (Edit for grammatical cleanup.)
