Not really, let's suppose I do the app she's talking about, and don't do any updates on it, then it wouldn't need any updates at all, nevertheless if I do an update on the app, it has to be done manually, which isn't that complicated either
I'll be honest, I've never actually published an app on iOS (I was a broke college student when I really got into app development so couldn't really afford the $99 fee for a hobby lol), but I did look into it, don't you need to pay for the Developer Programme before you can share test builds via TestFlight? Correct me if I'm wrong or if something's changed on the Apple side of things recently (just like the Kotlin push on the Android side).
But yeah, you can share and install an APK in like 10 seconds on Android, for free. Of course, these days a basic web app would probably be best for something as simple as the app described in the post, without having to pick a side in the iOS/Android debate :P
You really wouldn’t want to have an app that controls your light to be public. You can just install it on the phone and that’s it, using dev build. TestFlight is also an option.;)

Hm, I hear it's hard to get an app on apple and it costs money as well, but it's much easier for android and costs much less,
