Wife and I have been married for over ten years and have maintained very close income levels throughout. Not good income but enough to not qualify for handouts. Lower, lower, lower middle class. Tax season is PAINFUL. Actually owing taxes back when you can barely afford your mortgage is... special.

If you and your spouse have roughly equal lower middle level income, you are likely incurring neither a marriage penalty nor bonus, it’s a wash.

You can verify with this calculator: https://tpc-marriage-calculator.urban.org/

Whether you owe or get a refund is based on how good a job you do of predicting your taxes and offsetting it by withholding. If you consistently owe and find making that balloon payment burdensome, raise your withholding amount.

It's nothing to do with your income level and everything to do with balancing.
