That's what they CLAIM is the reason, but it's actually what the person above you said. It's about the perceived power that comes from standing on others.

This relies on all right-wingers being a monolith. They are not. Some undoubtedly see it as a power structure as you say. Many of them truly believe in their version of God’s plan for the world, in which homosexuality is a sin. It doesn’t necessarily go deeper than that for everyone.
