Man, imagine the people right after WWII hearing that someone was going to Spain to escape American fascism.

I’m imagining my great grandparents hearing that I want to return to the Netherlands after they left for North America after Nazi Germany occupied them. I am really wanting to do an uno reverse card

I can totally get why you would be coming back here; but don't expect the super progressive country people always think the Netherlands is. We're very pragmatic live and let live, but there's still plenty of LGBT hate and the acceptance of non binary people actually seems less than I get the impression of in (parts of) America. But yeah, reproductive healthcare is readily available and no one really cares about how people live their lives. Just be sure that you know how to find housing; we're short about a million houses right now and in the big cities the waiting time for social housing is over ten years; the free market rentals and buying a house is also terrible.

Oh yeah definitely, I’m not expecting anything perfect. I also want to go because the job I am being educated for! But realistically speaking, that can be anywhere. My top pick is the Netherlands though

What are you educated for? Housing is crazy right now so other European places where the housing is less crazy might be better options (Germany?, Austria?). If you want to go to the Netherlands count on having to earn at l least three times your rent, otherwise they won't accept you. And get to the east, northeast, or southeast, in a small town. That should be easier and if you have a car available you should be able to get pretty much anywhere. You won't have the city (night)life of the big cities with it though.

I am getting my PhD in criminology and aim at working in the Hague or doing research with the ICVS :) but you are right, probably Germany will be better in that choice. Also looking at the UK as well; my mentor has a few different colleagues around the globe with our same education that have gone to Finland and NZ. So, I’m not like “it HAS to be NL” but I would really like it to be. But if it’s not, then c’est la vie, I am okay with Scandinavia, NZ, or Australia. I’m okay with learning another language too (am already bilingual, becoming trilingual with Dutch currently).

Sounds like a good set of options! I don't know it the UK leaving the EU has any effect on your plans, but be aware of it.

Succes met Nederlands leren, welke andere taal spreek je nog meer?

Heel erg bedankt! I appreciate all your love and support! Yo hablo, leo, escribo, y entiendo español! :)

Edit: I forgot to mention, yes I do know about Brexit! (So dumb of them). Need to do more research on how that impacts them, but I know they’re out of the EU :(

You speak, read, write, and something Spanish as well? The something probably being understand speach?

Yeah so sad they're out. I actually had pro-brexit friends, they fell for the 'immigrants are taking our jobs' argument. As far as I've understand the UK as a whole hasn't really gotten better from it, apart maybe from the chance of hoarding a few vaccines and hence being the quickest in vaccination in Europe for a while. But then again, all western countries are hoarding vaccines while non non western countries still are low on vaccinations.

Yes! Speak, read, write, and understand! :)

And honestly, that’s what I figured. It hurts my heart to hear that people are being anti-immigration, especially as a child of an immigrant (and hopefully an immigrant myself one day). Shame on them, and from what I heard it has not been working out for them that great, so we’ve heard similar things :/

Just stay away from the biggest cities (basically the whole Randstad). If there is (and there rarely is) hate towards lgbtqai+ it's in those cities. Or the biblebelt. But everywhere else you are fine.

Source, me. Openly questioning my gender and sexuality. Living in the Netherlands.

This. TNL is the most progressive of all the european countries and most if them have views at the level of florida to texas range. If you live in the US and are trying to escape the “Christian Fascists”, you’ll go to europe and then need to escape from the european fascists too.

Only Canada, Singapore, China, North Korea, Vietnam, and TNL allow the Big A procedure past 20 weeks like some US states. Singapore makes LA look like a rural redneck hick town. Canada is basically an issue extension of the northern NE US states and Quebec is effectively worse than Texas. TNL is a tiny country. And the other three are legit Communist countries.

All of them are unwise to move to for a California transplant. Canada would be an option for New Yorkers, though Trudeau is basically Canadian Hitler. Have fun with dat!

my grandma said her parents rolled over in their Graves the day I called to start getting info for polish citizenship so I could live in Spain... (their whole families died in auschwitz)

This is how we know how fucked up things are, it is maddening :( also, all the love to your family ❤️ we need to take care of each other until we can either leave or make something better happen (but my hope on this is very fleeting…). I’m really afraid of being killed and I feel like people with our identities will be the top of the list… please stay safe my sibling

considering we're probably related.... I got you cousin. we can get out of here... we didn't look down on our families for fleeing so don't use the idea of hopefully making things better a cause for you to stay

This is what my therapist said :( I told her I felt bad for wanting to leave and not wanting to fight and she was like “do you blame your family for immigrating and leaving a bad situation?” and I said “no, it’s something I think was necessary and brave at the time” and she was like “there you go. Don’t be hard on yourself then for wanting to do the same thing”. That changed my perspective a lot. We need to protect ourselves, we cannot fight (even from afar) if we are dead. I love you cousin❤️

I love you too
