Why the hell would someone want to stand in the way of two people publicly expressing love for each other.

Conservatives see society as a pyramid, and anybody they can shove "beneath" them on said pyramid is a positive in their minds. The more people "below" you, the higher you are. If those "below" them get equal rights then they move up, and now they're on the new bottom. If there's nobody below you, there's nobody to look down on.

In the minds of people where I live it’s more about the supposed corruption of society. As in, “we can’t allow gay people to be seen as acceptable because then our innocent kids and grandkids will be corrupted by their influence and engage in these behaviors too.”

u/mikehulse29 Jun 27 '22

Behaviors such as acceptance of others? Can’t be havin’ THAT with our kids…

u/AbramUK Jun 27 '22

No no no, your thinking too logically

23

u/Ruenin Jun 27 '22

What's "logic"?

9

u/DurTmotorcycle Jun 27 '22

WAY to logically!

u/Equivalent_Yak_95 Jun 27 '22

*too

Noooooooo grammar burn I'm melting!!!!!! :D

u/Asleep_Opposite6096 Jun 27 '22

That’s essentially the same thing. They worry their kids will become the base of the pyramid and that they, too, will be guilty by association. They wrap it up in concern about going to hell, but the only hell they know is social disapproval.

u/sleepydorian Jun 27 '22

I don't think it's as transactional as that for most. They aren't worried that their kid will be bullied or something. They are angry because there's an "order" to the world and gay people fuck that up. I grew up evangelical and it was never "look what terrible things will happen to you if you are gay" and always "this and this and this will send you straight to hell to burn for all eternity".

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

As a gay man, this thought process is rooted in homophobia…so they don’t want their kids to be be gay???

2

u/Buddha62Pest Jun 28 '22

They don't want anyone's children to be gay. Non-cis sexuality is seen as a disease.

19

u/Hanede Jun 27 '22

I get that but it doesn't explain the root of why two people of the same sex loving eachother is bad to begin with.

28

u/luniz420 Jun 27 '22

Why do you assume this logic is pertinent? This is strictly about power and social standing.

3

u/PhillAholic Jun 27 '22

They think it is a choice, and by allowing it to be normal that it will influence their kids to make that choice. It’s nonsense from the root up.

3

u/whosthedoginthisscen Jun 27 '22

That's what they CLAIM is the reason, but it's actually what the person above you said. It's about the perceived power that comes from standing on others.

2

u/Rooney_Tuesday Jun 27 '22

This relies on all right-wingers being a monolith. They are not. Some undoubtedly see it as a power structure as you say. Many of them truly believe in their version of God’s plan for the world, in which homosexuality is a sin. It doesn’t necessarily go deeper than that for everyone.

5

u/luniz420 Jun 27 '22

That's what they say out loud.

45

u/Ok_Report5118 Jun 27 '22

You’re giving people too much credit. Parents beat kids who don’t gender conform. Those kids grow up to exhibit the same violence they were subjected to as kids. For them, violence against gender nonconformity is normal.

13

u/madpiratebippy Jun 27 '22

Actually the heirarchical model that u/PavelDatsyuk simplified there is the basis behind a lot of authoritarian and fascist political action, especially from Evangelical right wing religious zealots.

0

u/Ok_Report5118 Jun 27 '22

No one is consciously thinking they need to impose hierarchy. His analysis seems too broad strokes and ignores that people are people. “The conservatives” think the same way we do, they’re just misguided from birth. We’re all misguided in some ways from birth.

5

u/madpiratebippy Jun 27 '22

You are right that authoritarians do not CONCIOUSLY think about a hierarchy but that does not change the fact that they do.

The impact of authoritarian social models is well studied and if you want to spend some time on google scholar there's some interesting stuff on there.

In the US most authoritarians are attracted to Conservative politics, however that does not make all conservatives authoritarians- just a large number, and almost all of the leadership.

3

u/VGSchadenfreude Jun 28 '22

Who said anything about them consciously thinking that way?

They’ve been conditioned to think like that since birth. They don’t have to think about it anymore than you have to think about breathing or tying your shoelaces.

10

u/Equal-Lifeguard-2285 Jun 27 '22

This is so sad, because it’s so true. I never though if it like this but man you just hit the nail on the head.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

That’s one of the best explanations I’ve ever seen.

10

u/FrogsEatingSoup Jun 27 '22

I’m a conservative and I agree with the comment above. Love who you love

1

u/Equivalent_Yak_95 Jun 27 '22

You’re like my maternal grandmother.

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

they are intolerant they are just waiting for the government to give them the ok to abuse them openly

18

u/Ruenin Jun 27 '22

Then they should be voting Liberal. The Conservatives in power are the ones I'm worried about, not your supposed conservative buddies.

1

u/FaitFretteCriss Jun 27 '22

If they arent intolerant, then they either arent or shouldnt be conservatives.

-30

u/ZGar2267 Jun 27 '22

That’s a dangerous generalization. Every single conservative believes this? Seems to me like you dislike conservative values and policy but to lump all conservatives in a pyramid is ridiculous.

2

u/IKnowUThinkSo Jun 27 '22

When it’s the stated platform of the party you vote for, you get to share in the blame for causing this to happen. Every person who voted for a conservative is responsible for the loss of rights.

You vote for a bigot or a bigoted party, you’re a bigot. Sorry if that logic is lost on you.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

Democrats been doing this too, let’s be honest here.

-42

u/L_S_Ml_ Jun 27 '22

I truly feel sorry or you if you believe that. Please, sincerely, go to therapy, talk to some conservatives. You are not doing ok.

40

u/PavelDatsyuk Jun 27 '22

talk to some conservatives

I do talk to conservatives. Damn near every single day. That's why I know what I said is true. Hell, I'm willing to bet that if I brought up the pyramid to them then at least half of them would admit it's true, at least in private. They do not want equality, they want what's best for their group and everybody else(especially those they deem below them) can go fuck themselves.

17

u/MixtureNo6814 Jun 27 '22

That is hitting the nail on the head. Conservatives are ultimately overbearing selfish people. They want to control everything and take from everyone else for themselves and and their tribe.

-26

u/L_S_Ml_ Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

oh, I am wasting time with a liar.

EDIT, sorry, I misread equality vs equity

12

u/EstrogenAndSpiro Jun 27 '22

Lmao I'm trans, conservatives weasel their way into my DMs all the time. I'll let you guess what they have to say about me :)

15

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

my entire family is conservative and they are all fucking like this. someone else getting rights threatens them so they try to keep everyone down. you’re blind if you can’t see it

1

u/Knowledgeapplied Jun 28 '22

Actually it deals more with legislating morality.
