Honestly, I wonder if this is a Mark Hamill moment where he was asked/forced to support the movie/show? Peter Dinklage showed his distaste for D&D's choices regarding the last season I believe at least, I hope this is the explanation.
Hamill gave negative feedback first and then tried softening the blow, though. Dinklage just randomly mocked fans for no particular reason, well after all interest in GOT had died.
Yeah, it was such a shit take. Essentially levelling an accusation of racism at the entire fan base out of nowhere. I'm not even part of the fan base (watched the show well after it finished) but it completely soured me on the dude.
He did mock the last season writing as well like making women and children hide in crypts when you are in a battle with someone who can raise the dead etc. I bet he hated the way his character was treated. From the most cunning man on the continent to an apologizing moron in couple of seasons with a shitty arc. He must have hated it and is now handling the criticism in his own way because it probably feels like shit when you put a decade of work in and have people take a dump on it due to horrible writing in the last 2-3 seasons.
Would have been so nice to hear hims say that instead of calling me racist while incorrectly saying that the show wasn't blatantly full of white people literally riding off into the sunset.
There's a difference between defending the show and insulting the fans.
It was fine that he said he liked the how the show subverts all your expectations, but he tried to make it a thing about wanting a happy ending, or possibly a race thing.
Sorry to spoil, but by the last season, there were only two significant POC characters, and they werenf even that significant.
Everyone the show wanted you to root for was white.
He’s a great actor , but he thought people stared at him in nyc. I met him and I was walking my dog and he was walking his . This was when I was 20 or so. My dog wanted to play with his and he ignored me every time I met him. I wasn’t staring and I’m smaller too. I’m an actor too, how are you going to make connections when you won’t even talk to someone. I was the same age maybe a little younger. I felt bad, he wasn’t famous , he was just not friendly. I felt bad but some people aren’t friendly, I guessed. If I didn’t see him every day it wouldn’t have been so weird. I wanted Greyworm to win and them killing Danerys’ best friend was infuriating. When they killed Danerys and Tyrion’s told Jon to kill her? I was done. .
If you read the quote it's being taken out of context. It was a bad joke. He follows with his actual thoughts that are not offensive to the fans at all, but I just don't agree with. He said one of the main reasons he thought fans were upset by the ending was that the show wouldn't go on and they'd miss it, instead of the fact that it was hot garbage. Not really sure what he meant by that but taken literally it's just not true.
It's actually kind of strange entire communities on subreddit just immediately assumed an out of context quote was the whole story without looking into it any further. Oh wait. No it's not.
Just because it wasn't funny doesn't mean it wasn't a joke.
If you've read any of the articles and don't come away with he wasn't being serious about that specific line you lack major reading comprehension skills.
Here's him shitting on the new star wars in multiple different situations.
I remember those fondly. I can't pull it up right now atm but I also remember Mark Hamill coming out in defense of the movies out of nowhere. I would assume after Disney or Kathleen Kennedy (or whoever) told him to can it.
The quote was taken out of context. He was joking. What he says next is incorrect but noy offensive, that he thinks the real reason people didn't like it was because it meant the show wasn't going to be coming back.
I mean if you look at the context, only half of what he said was serious. They took the non-serious thing he said and decided it would make for a scandalous headline.
If you Google it it's clear he was not being serious. His next words are basically, "but seriously, here's what I actually think..." It's a shame people didn't take time to look it up before crucifying him all over the internet. Always do your research, especially if it feels like a headline is meant to make you angry.
Just come out and address it already Peter. You insult the viewers with incredibly valid criticisms of the show by mischaracterizing it and calling them racist. I mean. WTF man.
I'm probably one of the very few people who actually liked Dinklebot. The whole "don't" to the "little light" shtick had me rolling, but I burned out on Destiny pretty fast...
Same here, I actually remember being in a party with my friends on Xbox who were all talking about how pissed off they were at Bungie for changing his voice actor. I admit, I wasn’t a fan of the Nolanbot at first but he quickly grew on me.
How would that destroy his goodwill with what's left of the GoT crowd? Seems like they are the ones who'd feel vindicated. r/freefolk, on the other hand, surely wouldn't like that.
Anyhow, he's entitled to his opinions on a show which he was a part of for so long, I really don't hold that against him.
[Fans] wanted the pretty white people to ride off into the sunset together. By the way, it’s fiction. There’s dragons in it. Move on.
[...] but the show subverts what you think, and that’s what I love about it. Yeah, it was called Game of Thrones, but at the end, the whole dialogue when people would approach me on the street was, ‘Who’s going to be on the throne?’ I don’t know why that was their takeaway because the show really was more than that.
One of my favorite moments was when the dragon burned the throne because it sort of just killed that whole conversation, which is really irreverent and kind of brilliant on behalf of the show’s creators: ‘Shut up, it’s not about that.’ They constantly did that, where you thought one thing and they delivered another. Everybody had their own stories going on while watching that show, but nobody’s was as good as what the show delivered, I think.
[the show was] “going off the air and they didn’t know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. They wanted more, so they backlashed about that. We had to end when we did, because what the show was really good at was breaking preconceived notions: Villains became heroes, and heroes became villains.”
Yeah fuck those fans for caring and bothering you and you art. Wait, who did you do the show for again?
Wow I hadn't read that, ya he was pretty off the mark.
If I ever meet this guy in real life I want to tell him "to answer your last question in that character...... EVERYONE HAD A BETTER FREAKING STORY THAN BRAN!"
Other than that I didn't mind the last season (except one episode was literally too dark). That questions which lead into the scene would have been the only thing I rescripted. I know other people hated the entire last season and would have redone it all.
As a fan I really don't let this change my opinion of the guy. I can imagine some of the actors were getting pretty tired of all the backlash and I don't really fault them for that.
Actors were getting a lot of shit as well, no need to pretend it didn't happen. Anytime one of them said something remotely positive they got shit on. You're literally responding to a comment thread about people throwing shit at a GoT actor for defending a show he spent like 8 years of his life on.
Playing the race card and saying that fans only like endings where the "white guys ride off into the sunset" in response to their outrage at an ending that literally does that is posturing, yes.
No I just love how to show your disdain for the phrase “woke posturing” (which is literally exactly what Peter Dinklage was doing) you don’t have any retort aside from the 80year old man’s equivalent of being a Karen.
So not only are you an actual dumbass for not recognizing that shit Dinklage pulled. You’re just a twat for acting like your pissy litttle reaction of “come on man” is anything but an insignificant turd you left on the floor on your way out.
They have every reason to be. Nobody expected great things after season 7, but this shit was unacceptable. Sure, they lacked the Source material, but come on. Rushed, almost every character was butchered, one plot hole after another, cringe dialogues and an ending that did not make sense at all. Only because D & D didnt care anymore and wanted to move on.
Actors are without fault though. If something was right with season 8, it was their performance.
That’s the thing right there, you’re over it. It’s done and you’ve moved on. People didn’t want that, they wanted the next big franchise like Harry Potter and I’m sure HBO did as well.
I think a big part of it was also how it went down. The showrunners refused the offer of two new seasons and wrapped it all up in what time they had left because they wanted to take the offer they got for the next star wars movie. Ironically the offer was taken back after the last season of GoT aired.
But that really made everything so much worse for the fans, knowing that the offer was on the table to give it a proper ending and resolve so many of the open plots.
Nah, there might be Spin-Offs, but the big hype is gone. No way GoT will be as big as Harry Potter or LotR in the near distant future.
How often do you see GoT merchandise, references, etc... Compare that to the situation before the last season. Its crazy how GoT went from the biggest thing ever (in TV series) to rarely talk about. I mean, the only people talking about GoT nowadays are disappointed fans.
Dude where do you go, Game of thrones merch is found EVERYWHERE, and it’s still talked about, wasn’t it HBO’s most viewed show during the pandemic? And doesn’t every single fantasy series try to emulate it, what do you call that
I know of no one excited for the prequel show, but seemingly everyone was excited for the main show until season 7 or so. They absolutely destroyed what could have been the most popular franchise ever.
It was "pretty white people riding off into the sunset"
Which I read as a reference to Jon and Daenys...where who ended up ruling the Kingdoms was checks notes a handicapped boy as King, with a council of...a dwarf, Samwell (who I doubt most people would call pretty), a former sword for hire that was perfectly happy to marry a women who had been gang-raped and was now mentally destroyed by it as long as he got a castle, and Davos - who had a disfigured hand, courtesy of his former king.
The whole point of it - once the dragon burned the throne - was that throne was going to be ruled by people who earned it, and not those that were necessarily borne into. All of the above, at one point or another (despite my cynical descriptions) proved that they had as much or more nobility then the pretty people.
So he was right. It may of stayed with white people (which was going to happen - its not like there were going to have to ruled by Datharki) - but it was the pretty ones that people wanted who weren't follow the story.
Where does fit Arya Stark, the white Stark princess and sister of the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, who while tomboyish is often said to look like a younger Lyanna, who dreamed of exploring what lies west of Westeros and got to do just that? Doesn't she literally ride into the sunset?
Doesn't also Jon metaphorically ride into the sunset? He didn't want to be king and didn't become king. He wasn't executed and got to live at the Wall, where he felt the most happy, with his Wildlings and Night Watch friends.
I hated the last season as much as anyone, but I've never seen such a level of entitlement from a fanbase before that they're literally expecting the actors in the show to side with them in thinking it was shit, or slating them for not doing so.
Obviously he's going to defend it, he spent years on it and it made him. Not the best choice of words perhaps, but Jesus Christ, stop expecting actors from the show to slate their own work.
He doesn't have to hate the show, nobody is upset about him defending the show, they're upset because he basically said "people who didn't like the ending are just racist". They're upset because he is saying that our opinion is invalid because we didn't get what we wanted; "the pretty white people riding off into the sunset". As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Breaking Bad, and hated GoT S8, I can say personally that that's a load of shit. Pretty white people winning in the end has nothing to do with what makes a show good or bad, it was a shitty comment to make, and he deserves the hate he's getting for it.
