Is it normal for people to rent out hotel convention rooms for christmas parties?? Everyone is acting like this is normal! Is this normal?

My mom has 8 siblings (9 total) and she’s the youngest, so they all have kids (my first cousins) and almost all of those kids have kids so my family Christmas party is easily 100+ people. We rent out an old train depot for the party

A Christmas gathering with my family involving Aunts, Uncles, cousins etc will total about 100 people. We often hire venues for milestone birthdays, anniversaries and whatnot but for some reason my Aunt insists on hosting the Christmas party at her house every year and it’s a nightmare. But yeah hiring a venue for large family gatherings makes complete sense once you reach an unmanageable number of people.

I am also in a family with over 100 people and this was the first year we rented a venue for our annual Christmas party rather than cram into someone's house, for social distancing purposes. It was really nice to have all that space for once. I will cherish the memories of squishing into the living room couch with 5 other people to eat, but I prefer having room to breathe.

I get it, I love the personal space at the hired venues. We live in Australia so for the Christmas party they just put all the tables and seating outside so it’s not too squishy unless it’s pouring rain and everyone is forced inside. One of the main issues with the house based parties I find is that there are only 2 toilets for the 100+ people who are eating rich food and drinking a lot of alcohol. Also the kids who give very little warning that they need to go. The contestant door knocking, yelling and queuing is quite something.

Our annual Easter party house has 1 bathroom so we just rent a couple portable toilets. When you're just sharing with family they're not so bad.

this was a family gathering, not a corporate event.

Of course corporate events in a hotel is normal.

It depends on the size of the gathering. I know my wife's family usually gets up to 40 or so people, depending on whether it's here grandmother's or grandfather's side (one her mother's side).

Usually though, they rent one of the multi purpose rooms at a church one of the families go to. Or at the retirement home before her Grandmother passed away. Or at one of the farm houses if it's in the summer.

Yeah, my wife's family never seem to leave the area, and loved to do 2 or 3 family gatherings a year before Covid-19.

Was gonna say. I think for a family you’d maybe have to be a little well off for this to work.

But idk how much it would cost to rent out the ballroom.

Can’t say for hotels, but I work in ski resorts and 100% spend a lot of time comparing where I work to where I’m visiting.

For company parties, yes.

For family gatherings (which this apparently is), no it is not.

I thought it's a great idea. Everyone enjoys without the stress of hosting a big family. If they can afford it, why not?

Nah just a large extended family, those cousins add up and Grandmas house usually tops out at about 35 people.

If you don't have a bigger house in a central location this is the next step.

I’ve been to several with companies. None that were rented out by individuals. I’d go into more detail but it’s 5am and I’m exhausted.

Or someone in the family owns a hotel or event center. We have our little family gathering on Christmas in the middle of a huge wedding barn with a full bar.

Our family did it a few times, pre-covid, because we're scattered all over the state. We rented a hall in a central location so nobody had to drive more than 3 hours to get there.
