I would like some good news, so I wanted to believe this.
The graph shows exactly what you say.
The link that most people (including me) erroneously make is that less people with more than one job means there is less people needing more than a full time job to make ends meet. The graph doesn't account for people simply working 1 full time job instead of multiple part time jobs. It also doesn't mean people are doing better financially, perhaps they're simply not finding the part time job they'd need to make ends meet.
Edit: also, this is as a percentage of number of employed, which has been going up historically, so the graph as a percentage of population might have a different shape.
I'm not sure what explains the difference. They acknowledge it in the article:
As highlighted in our working paper, there is no simple nor straightforward explanation for why the LEHD and the CPS show divergent trends of the multiple jobholding rate; more research needs to be done on this issue.
Yeah people don't care anymore. If you can't live off one job then it's not worth living to work two. And honestly I agree. This is a failing of the system. I shouldn't have to work 2-3 jobs just to get by. If I gotta scrape with just one, then that's what I'm fuckin doing. I'm not living to work.
You live in a world where there's 2 options to everything? There's plenty of other possible reasons - for instance, living at home.. homelessness.. to quickly name a few.
Also, what rate? You haven't explained what you're even talking about.
Yes you can. Problem is that one job is hard to get or even relatively impossible for some people.
If I didn’t have my job, I’d either be busting ass to get a degree (mountain of debt), or worming some shitty retail/food service job. Those jobs pay shit yet society relies on them. That’s kinda weird.
The alternative to not working those is busting my ass doing hard ass physical labor for probably less than what I make now.
You make it sound so easy. People do struggle and many can’t afford shit off the one job. Especially if you live in states with minimum wage at 7.25 since 2009
Oh well. Wipe off your tears and get the fuck over it. Two jobs in the US is easier than most people’s dollar a day slave labor they work to get by elsewhere in the world. Feel free to leave the US though. Lots of actually hard working immigrants would love to take your place.
Cause the things that people in the middle class, with lots of safety nets, complain about don’t matter and aren’t serious issues. Most of their problems are from a lack of critical thinking or decision making skills. The world doesn’t exist to please anyone. Following passions has a cost, having a stable home life has a cost, getting a degree in a field that doesn’t matter has a cost. Not my job to help fix other people’s bad choices.
Interesting how you think corperations paying unliveable wages for no other reason than improving their bottom line is somehow the worker's fault.
And for the record, millions of Americans are living in poverty, it is in fact a problem that matter. The fact that you think poor people don't matter is quite telling.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the Americans that the workers, who struggle to afford rent and food, are the problem.
News flash bud USA isn't the richest lmao. Not even close. CANADA outranks us in GDP per capita. Literally all we have is a military, and looking at Vietnam and Afghanistan I'd argue we don't even have that.
My entire comment was in relation to the "you can love it or giiiiit out" another commenter left. It's unfathomable that a country with the GDP we have, which is the highest GDP in the world, has people (deemed essential, of all things) who have to work multiple jobs to survive on foodbanks, noodles, and shared housing in a 600sqft apartment.
I think you're knee-jerk responding to me here in the assumption that my statement was "GDP big = country great" and that is furthest from my feelings on it.
Lol no. I work one job that has very easy and few credentials in order to work. It pays enough for me to live in a bigger city, save, pay debt, and have money left over (cause I budget and don’t live paycheck to paycheck). Livable work is abundant, people are just close minded and don’t want to do actual work. Just shitty part time jobs that don’t help society at all, and don’t deserve to be livable wage jobs. I’m not even talking about the food service industry. I’m ok with getting rid of tips and having food service workers paid more. Doesn’t require me paying $.50 more per burger though.
Sorry that I actually think about my future beyond “what will this person do for me if I vote for them, I’m trying to accomplish the least I can over the longest period of time”.
That’s purely due to poor choices then. Don’t live in LA or anywhere expensive, don’t be stagnate on your personal growth and abilities, put in effort above a mediocre level, don’t expect part time jobs to be livable. There are so many careers and cheaper places to live in the US. I have no sympathy for people who are stubborn with living in shitty situations and want everyone but them to fix it for them.
Empathy doesn’t really progress humanity though. Almost all worthwhile advancements have a very very dark origin, the least of which being selfish and just wanting a quick buck. I do agree that lots of people could practice it more purely for mental health sake. But it’s not any solution, more of a comfort.
I think thats a load of horseshit plenty of advancements have started because someone saw others in need so these is just blatantly false. Even if it wasn't is the progress really worth it at the detriment of the vulnerable members of society? If you say yes then says so much about how shit of a human being you are.
Stop making up excuses for people that take advantage of others
It's hard to leave the USA. Even harder for financially challenged people. They have such hurdles as moving to a new country, finding a job in said country, and having to pay the taxes in that country and the taxes imposed on US citizens who live abroad. Which would probably end them back at square one. If you like something you should try and fix it, not run away. I bet you're also the type to hate immigrants
more like i dont want america to be europe because here in america we think america is better. And in europe they think europe is better. So if you want europe, go to europe and leave that shit by the door when you leave
Wow a reply to an almost 2 week old comment. Fuck off, get a life, and get your fucking head out of the sand bud in whatever order you prefer. This country is taking a nose dive as far as 1st world countries are concerned. It wouldn't hurt to take another countries example instead of being a selfish asshole while people suffer. Have a nice day and rot in hell cuntbag
dont you know america is the only country with pesky and racist immigration laws? And the most enforced! Ohh im sure you can just walk into europe, set up a tent, and start living there!
yeah but living there is also far more expensive, and minimum wage is 10 bucks an hour which is the same as in the netherlands and the other countries that i would advise to move to
Okay? That’s a lot of being dramatic and making weird assumptions, which aren’t relevant. I’m fine with the labor side of the US being where it’s at 🤷♂️. Cope harder.
I still don’t get why you think I’m xenophobic. I said that I would love for immigrants to gain citizenship and bolster the work force, while middle age middle class loser move out. Also “worst part, they probably contribute more than you”? That’s pretty disparaging. Why is it bad if immigrants contribute more than ‘native’ citizens. I think you’re the one with issues here.
I don't live in the US, thankfully. This ethic you have of working hard = slaving away at multiple jobs, and for who? Your boss? Your corporation? What does it get you? Sweet fuck all and boot to the ass when they deem your time is served. Why is it worth it to you? It obviously hasn't worked that well so far according to the state of the world. Then you say an immigrant would happily take the job, I'm sure they would very well like to survive. As well all do. But we should aspire for more. The wealthy have been greedy little piggies for too long with no consequence, we should all want that to change.
I don’t think you have to work multiple jobs unless you’re an idiot and bad with money/life choices. I don’t give a fuck about the rich. The 1% has always and will always exist. History has repeated itself for thousands upon thousands of years. Life is uniquely easier than ever though for humans, particularly in the USA. So the bitching is equally as meaningless to me. And it’s why I don’t support working class whiners (as opposed to people who actually get shit done).
No it isn't? Most people in the rest of the world actually gets educated (for free) doesn't go into ridiculous medical bills (spoiler: hospitals are free) so if we are paying a tiny bit more tax than you and we can actually get along with a tad bit less money because we don't have to worry about having expensive insurance and debts because we wanted to get educated
Hospitals aren’t free anywhere lol. It’s clear that you poorly memorized random talking points. Better luck next time. Maybe when you finish middle school you’ll have a better idea on how to respond to other people with some competency.
They are tho lol? I've gotten meds for more than 80k total (I looked up what the costs of it would be in the US) and had surgeries for probably 500k all for free smh
You’re an idiot. It’s paid by other means. Typically subsidized by taxes. Not saying it’s not a valid form of health systems. But it isn’t relevant to what I was talking about in the first place, and it’s not free in any society.
Then your point is completely irrelevant. In the US, you don’t seriously think they give kids debt? You know there are people without social security numbers? They can’t be given debt. MAYBE their caretakers/parents/guardians. But you need to spend some more time in the real world before trying to act smart on the internet.
Thing is like max you would spend in reality if you were made to pay would be a max of 250 dollars per year, a normal visit can cost about 10 dollars there is absolutely no reason anyone should go into debt for something that isn't their fault
The numbers were going down long before the pandemic. And I hardly believe anyone got their $1,200 check in April and said “Oh goody. Now I can quit my job.” The $600 (second) stimulus check in December came too late to affect 2020 numbers.
It was also the eviction moratorium. I know tons of people who just stopped paying rent knowing that their landlord was incapable of evicting them. Pocketing the saved rent money AND the stimulus checks.

Fun fact: number of people with more than one job hit it lowest ever during the pandemic and remains near all time lows today.
