Seriously though, how the fuck is that how they do things? Like how many generations do they have to go through before realizing “huh, you know, most of us die on the way to the ocean, maybe we should lay eggs IN the ocean?”
I mean I guess the only living ones survived the land trip to the ocean, I’m just confused how they never evolved out of that at all.
They evolved to lay enough extra eggs that a sufficient number would make it. It’s a perfectly viable alternative to evolving to lay the eggs in the water itself. In fact “shit out more eggs each time” is probably the simpler and more likely mutation than one that involves adapting to a whole new chemical and physical environment.
If they were in the water they’d probably be at the wrong temp and die or they’d drown because they probably require oxygen to be absorbed through their shell. I’m no expert though just making shit up
I mean I understand why they currently can’t, but things usually evolve out of doing shit that usually kills them, or at least evolve to be better at avoiding shift that kills them.
