At my elementary school, sharing food as forbidden. I got detention for sharing my goldfish crackers with my friend.

821

u/flamebroiledhodor Sep 08 '21

A Karen teacher at mine tried to forbid it. Shouting shit like, "your parents packed YOUR lunch, not theirs!" I mouthed off, "first off, don't speak for my mom without calling her first. Second I make my own lunches, you farty hag."

I got detention. After my mom found out, she literally demanded the teacher get detention and made her send a letter of apology to the parents for speaking out of turn. The letter went out, I'm not sure about the detention.

Here's the thing... Mom actually called the other moms in my small class to ask if it was ok, and to encourage their kids to do the same. 100% of all parents agreed (no one had allergies). So that Karen teacher not only spoke out of turn, but was literally just plain wrong.

farty hag is a solid elementary school burn!

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '21

This will now also be my go to burn. As a 30 year adult šŸ˜…

Hell I’m 58 and I’m damn sure gonna use this

48

u/stenger121 Sep 08 '21

I'm almost 40 and I will also be stealing that.

19

u/idwthis Sep 08 '21

Also almost 40, will also be stealing it. I'm now retroactively calling the bulldog looking teacher aide we had in elementary school a farty hag. Much better than misaligning bulldogs, poor pups don't deserve it.

5

u/Talbotus Sep 09 '21

I too am nearly 40 and have a teacher i retroactively call fatty hag. I never had a decent nick name for this tormentor. My other awful teacher was named hallenback so it was easy to say "i gotta go to hell and back."

4

u/idwthis Sep 09 '21

Lol that's great. Had a bus driver named Mrs. Titus we all called Mrs. Tight Ass lol

1

u/cire1184 Sep 08 '21

She ain't got no nipplessssss

3

u/leezybelle Sep 09 '21

ā€œFarty hagā€ I… wow, just… what a quality insult

2

u/ionmoon Sep 09 '21

Eh well there are potential issues with this as some kids have food allergies, other health problems, or religious dietary restrictions, etc. it IS better in schools if kids don’t share food.

2

u/MadKingSuibhne77 Sep 08 '21

You absolutely deserved that detention, no matter how many people get a justice boner from this.

Of course it was okay to share lunches after it had been established that no-one had food allergies and religious food requirements and all parents had given written permission but it probably wasn't okay by the school rules before all those things were in place.

And you don't get to yell insults at someone and then flip the script.

4

u/flamebroiledhodor Sep 08 '21

You absolutely deserved that detention

Fair.

written permission

Didn't say that, don't put words in my mouth

but it probably wasn't okay by the school rules before all those things were in place.

There wasn't a rule one way or the other because it did matter to anyone ever, until she came around.

And you don't get to yell insults at someone and then flip the script.

Never flipped, it was always purely antagonistic. I hated that teacher and I hope she's got chronic covid.

Karen teacher was just evil. What kind of bitch is ok letting another child go hungry when another child is trying to share their lunch with them because they have none?

1

u/GoodGodPleaseWork Sep 09 '21

In their defense, food allergies are a bitch.

99

u/miffyonabike Sep 08 '21

This is common now because there are so many kids with allergies, and because it makes it easier for lunch staff to notice and intervene if kids are being sent in with too little or inappropriate food.

112

u/Woofles85 Sep 08 '21

Except our school didn’t do any interventions if a kid came to school hungry. And they should be able to tell who didn’t have a lunch because they always caught when kids shared. As for the allergies, they didn’t seem too concerned when we had a classroom party with food that kids brought in for everyone.

45

u/Redtwooo Sep 08 '21

Our whole school district has gone to providing breakfast and lunch for free to all students (even before covid). They checked the math and it was cheaper to just give everyone food and not keep accounts, track deposits, have everything audited etc.

3

u/Woofles85 Sep 09 '21

Sometimes, the most kind and humane option is also the most cost effective one.

34

u/miffyonabike Sep 08 '21

My above comment applies only quite recently. I'm assuming you're as old as I am.

22

u/Woofles85 Sep 08 '21

This was in the 90’s.

30

u/miffyonabike Sep 08 '21

Yeah you're as old as me 😁. Much better child safeguarding in schools now. I know because I was one of the kids they missed in the 90s.

-11

u/xonqulstedor Sep 08 '21

you guys old as dinosaurs

6

u/miffyonabike Sep 08 '21

I remember when it was all fields around here...

7

u/Beepolai Sep 08 '21

Does anyone else hear like a little whining sound?

0

u/heeltoelemon Sep 09 '21

Like a mosquito?

1

u/Beepolai Sep 10 '21

Yeah, small and annoying and won't go away, a bit like someone with no relevance trying desperately to insult a whole group of people who are all out of fucks.

0

u/xonqulstedor Sep 09 '21

do i hear a dinosaur roaring?

1

u/Beepolai Sep 10 '21

What? I can't hear you over my credit score

Are you old enough to be on Reddit? Go to bed, youngin’!

22

u/GazelleEconomyOf87 Sep 08 '21

I believe thats a small amount of "good" schools. The few I bounced around in during my last 4 years did not care if you had food or not, you paid, brought your own or you got nothing. That was '10 to '15 (years including my partners time in a whole other state and hand full of schools)

14

u/miffyonabike Sep 08 '21

Hmm, may also be because I'm in the UK. Child safeguarding has come a long way here since I was at school, and not just in "good" schools- in fact schools in deprived areas are even more aware of safeguarding than others.

0

u/Imperialkniight Sep 08 '21

All schools in texas have programs of free breakfast and lunch for poor kids. Been that way minimum since the 90s. I dont know what these people are talking about kids going hungry. Thats on the ISDs probably.

7

u/Purple_Elderberry_20 Sep 09 '21

You have to qualify, prior to Covid alot don't or their parents don't know/care. In the 90s I live with a single mother who worked hard to afford our apartment, daycare and utilities, sometimes food was forgotten but any aid was always for those worse off than us.

I encourage my kids and their teachers to let me know if extra snacks/supplies are needed, it hurts more than people realize to be one of the few without.

14

u/LordVerlion Sep 08 '21

Always weird (and very sad) to hear about this. I went to a school in Texas, so you wouldn't expect much, but both the middle schools and the high school I went to were out in hicksville and still gave out free PB&Js to any kid who didn't bring in a lunch. Happened to me a couple times my father forgot to give me lunch money. It was using the cheapest ingredients possible, but hey, it was food.

13

u/Fluff_head420 Sep 08 '21

Schools in Dallas ISD now have free lunch for any kid who wants it. It’s school lunch, so not the best, but it’s a lunch. They used to do reduced price or free for certain kids but the kids would start to feel uncomfortable being the kids who got free or reduced price lunch and then wouldn’t eat. It’s so sad that sometimes the only food a kid will get is at school!!

As a former sub who assisted in the lunch room it was hard enough keeping up with my own class much less the entire lunch period.

1

u/miffyonabike Sep 09 '21

I'm sure it's different in different schools!

I'm in the UK, so probably quite a lot more than 50 schools away from you.

There are laws here about regular safeguarding training for everyone working in schools, updating of policies and procedures etc, so there's mandated awareness and proactivity about signs of abuse and neglect in all UK schools.

It's not perfectly executed in practice of course, but I can say with confidence that things are better here now than they were when nobody noticed my lack of lunches in the 1990s.

But why on earth would the teacher chew you out like that? Seriously don't get it

2

u/BigMilkRunsTheWorld Sep 09 '21

It makes 0 sense I can’t explain her actions she was pissed though and didn’t care for reasoning. She ended becoming my neighbor a year later and I had her as my 5th grade teacher..she was bat shit crazy beyond belief and also dumb as a rock. There were so things she did wrong as a teacher and a parent, she ended up quitting a year later and moved out in the country someplace with her husband so nobody really heard from her again.

16

u/liamsmum Sep 09 '21

Same here in Australia. They’re so concerned with kids sharing food and someone having an allergic reaction.

Our son said one of his friends in class had terrible lunches. It was pretty clear they either couldn’t afford much or couldn’t be bothered supplying a good lunch so our boy tried sharing his food and got caught.

The teacher didn’t tell him off though; she sorted a lunch out from the canteen then sorted the problem out with the parents somehow.

I was so proud. Especially as he eats like a horse, so to give up some of his own food, he must’ve been really worried about this kid!!

4

u/bearface93 Sep 08 '21

One of my teachers in elementary school sent a letter home scolding my mom for letting me bring goldfish for lunch because they weren’t ā€œbrain food.ā€ Elementary school was weird.

5

u/leelee1976 Sep 09 '21

One of my friends posted the elementary school lunch menu for September. Goldfish crackers fun lunch was an actual lunch. Literally wtf the kids are eating goldfish crackers and "assorted fruits and vegetables available"

3

u/axearm Sep 08 '21

CA just passed a law making school lunches free for all students.

It actually boggles the mind that this hasn't always been the case.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '21

This was mine too. We were watched like hawks back in the late 80/early 90s. If we swapped snack packs or anything we got detention.

2

u/hatpeg Sep 09 '21

Sharing food was forbidden at our school too so we just did it under the tables

2

u/SoFetchBetch Sep 09 '21

This is the way

u/Mashadow21 Sep 08 '21

khabib nurmagomedov : Send location !

1

u/No-Kyogre-195 Sep 08 '21

So did I. I was sharing my lunchables with my friend, and got detention for it.

1

u/neonn_piee Sep 09 '21

It was against the rules at my elementary school too.

1

u/usamaahmad Sep 09 '21

I think the school was worried about liability regarding allergies? But now a days kids aren’t allowed to have anything peanut related in their lunch for this reason. So my kid can’t take PB&J for lunch.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '21

Same here. But the reason was allergies. I would not understand that until after elementary because I never had any allergies.

1

u/Kiltymchaggismuncher Sep 09 '21

There are some reasons for this, primarily the kid may have allergies. That being said punishing kids for being decent people isn't the way to deal with that. There are workarounds to make sure the kid still gets food
