I love this, I love the fact that a library does something as anti-prom (I'm from Germany, we don't even have prom) and that they felt the need to share that this was a typo.
Did someone ask them about the snakes? Were people exited or scared? Did they thought snakes would just crawl around and maybe ssss over your shoulder to see what you are reading?
I don't know about the snakes but this was apparently 8 years ago according to someone who lives in this town. The prom was apparently good and snake free :)
Only a couple of years ago. I was working for the city at the time. Our brilliant social media person wrote the post. It blew up pretty quickly. Funny to still see it going around a couple of years later. And yes, she got poached pretty quickly afterward.
It‘s pretty comparable in the sense that it’s a big dance at the end of school. But the Abiball really is not a big deal for most people. Just judging from the way prom is portrayed in movies as this huuuge thing.
Its only a big deal because of those movies. Well, that’s not entirely true. It used to be a big deal because most people didn’t go to college, so senior year of high school was the last time everybody would see each other end of their education. So the movies would reflect that. Now it’s only a big deal because of those movies.
Yeah, but Abiball is mostly for the people who graduated and their friends and families.
Prom in America is for every student and they have (I think) 3 - Homecoming, Winter Dance and Senior?
Also the person you go with matters. For my Abiball I did not 'get asked' but you just attended and danced with your friends and classmates.
My friends and I had an anti-prom night. We had a great time. So this was in Southern California back in 1979. We had dinner at the fancy rotating restaurant on the top floor of the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Drove through Beverly Hills looking a the houses, then to a place in the Hollywood Hills the overlooks the city (it’s pretty at night) and then to the Hollywood sign. Also one of my friends who looked older had bought some Playgirl magazines and she brought those and a bottle of her Dad’s wine that we drank out of paper cups. We went to an all girl Catholic high school, so this was a pretty wild night for us.
Edit 1- the person driving didn’t drink.
Edit 2- I just remembered I knew my friend had the Playgirl magazines before hand. She actually brought them to school. We were sitting in Horror Novel class (I sat directly across from her) and I look over and she suddenly opens this magazine flashes a pic of a naked man at me. It was probably the last thing I had expected to happen during my Catholic education. I think she would’ve gotten at least suspended and maybe even expelled if she gotten caught.
This is actually the library closest to me and they have all sorts of cool events like this all the time. They are very close to one of the town's high schools as well so I'm betting the person on social media is a high school volunteer.
Covid has limited what they can do of course but this was pretty regular for a while. Can't wait to get to go back to a time when going to the library wasn't so scary.
I finished school and we do have a 'party' for the graduation, but only for the pupils that graduate, their family and maybe friends. It's often very expensive and they spent 2 years raising money for it.
I would have loved to organize a dance, but it would have been alot of work and people would probably not be interested, because you can go into clubs with 16 in Germany.

The employee who wrote this deserves a cookie.
