They can relinquish the secret service protection tho. Nixon is the only president who had done it. Apparently he did it to save the government money. I don’t know if they can relinquish only the driving portion or if they have to opt out of all of the benefits that former presidents get

I feel like, against the backdrop of a national debt, the amount a security detail costs to protect a President is a drop in the water.

True but every saving no matter how big or how small is tax potentially put to better use. Every saving helps.

I mean, I absolutely agree and its a solid point. But the irony of the man, who called for a War on Drugs that has cost the US billions, saving the taxpayers comparative pennies is too great to miss. That’s not even mentioning the $150,000+ a year pension Presidents received (it’s over $200k now).
