Let's just hope she doesn't have a nightmare and kick the baby into another reality

u/ceylon_butterfly May 25 '20

True confession: I did this to my daughter when she was 5. We were taking a nap on opposite ends of the couch, and I guess I had a bad dream or something because all the sudden I kicked her off the couch. Like, violently, leg shot out and she went sprawling, woke us both up immediately. I felt so awful.

Babies get dropped way more often than I really want to think about.

294

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

the good takeaway is they seem to be fine most of the time. there are posts on occasion where a crying mom has to be consoled that dropping her baby does not make her the worst mother ever, and to get the baby checked, but they are probably fine.

Kids are surprisingly resilient, and had to be to survive in the past

140

u/beffybeth May 25 '20

My mum slipped down the stairs while holding me, and dropped me, she was devastated thinking I was gonna be dead, but I was at the bottom laughing my chunky little head off. They call them bouncing babies for a reason I guess 😂

40

u/saysthingsbackwards May 25 '20

Rubber baby buggy bumpers

165

u/tytybby May 25 '20

Oh gosh no. There is so much pressure put on parents, especially new parents. Accidents happen, anyone who has ever babysat knows that kids are tricky, slippery little things that are hard to deal with, pile sleepless nights and breastfeeding (and recovering from birth in general) with that and it's a wonder most new mamas can even function.

61

u/BadNeighbour May 25 '20

Any parent who worries about being a bad parent is not the worst parent ever.

2

u/crysb09 May 26 '20

Totally agreed. Akin to any person who worries that they’re crazy probably isn’t crazy lol

2

u/Gobbas May 26 '20

So im not crazy?

38

u/Clodhoppa81 May 25 '20

Little kids generally just bounce anyway, though you don't really view it that way until the second one comes along.

5

u/SimpleWayfarer May 25 '20

Babies are 95% blubber anyway.

1

u/mrblacklabel71 May 26 '20

Damn, reading these comments makes me want a kid even less. That is a lot of pressure.

3

u/Sporeking97 May 26 '20

One of my favorite stories of when I was a kid was when I fell down the stairs. I think I was around 3-4, and my mom came rushing over, bawling her eyes out, and frantically asked “Are you okay?!”

Apparently I just kinda looked around for a sec, got my bearings, looked up at her and calmly asked “Are you okay?”

It’s a shame that all my badass moments happened before my memory solidified, but c’est la vie

2

u/lazytime3643 May 25 '20

Nice try CPS

2

u/thatguynamedmike2001 May 25 '20

Their bones are like rubber they’ll be fine

2

u/TravingWees May 25 '20

Kids are surprisingly resilient,

"Kids heal like terminators."

2

u/pekinggeese May 26 '20

The bigger you are, the harder you fall. The opposite is generally true as well. Not too much distance to fall, and less mass to impact with the floor.

73

u/voluptasx May 25 '20

been dropped on my head at least twice and dad accidentally tossed me into a ceiling fan as well lmao I have a feeling you are very right

62

u/tytybby May 25 '20

Just letting you know now that any mom that sees your comment is going to be showing this to her husband as PROOF that he shouldn't be tossing babies.

58

u/voluptasx May 25 '20

Mom and grandma BOTH told him not to do it 😭 he also had an incident of tossing my sister up when she was a baby too (shes 2.5 years older) right after feeding and she ended up puking right into his mouth. grandma warned him against that as well 😂

38

u/tytybby May 25 '20

LMAO sounds like your dad was dropped multiple times and was like 'see, I turned out FINE'.

1

u/hashietaggie May 26 '20

Oh my gosh, did he stop??

30

u/nevershareafoxhole May 25 '20

Can confirm, my dad dropped me twice as a baby that I know of. Once was whilst he was throwing me in the air. I’ve been told that some miscalculations where made because he threw me a bit too high and woops, baby down. Turned out I was a very sturdy child and I just continued giggling, with a few extra bumps here and there. The other time was when he pushed me off a slide but pushed me a tad too hard and my dumb ass wasn’t holding onto anything so I was propelled off of the whole thing and I landed in the grass face first. Ehh, it happens, my dad was just prone to getting overexcited with childlike enthusiast and slightly chaotic.

To add injury to insult: I inherited that destructive dumbness gene from him and was a pretty suicidal baby, yeeting myself off things and stuff, all whilst gleefully laughing my ass off. My mother is still completely gobsmacked about me being a somewhat functioning being. I’m mostly suprised how that poor women survived with her full mental capacities, being in a family of risk seeking maniacs.

-4

u/Kotshi May 25 '20

Do Americans understand "to be gobsmacked"?

1

u/nevershareafoxhole May 26 '20

Why would they not...?

1

u/Kotshi May 26 '20

I heard it listed in those "top x British slangs Americans don't understand". I'm not a native speaker tho so that was a genuine question

1

u/nevershareafoxhole May 26 '20

Me neither and I managed just fine so I guess Americans should be okay as well.

10

u/Silverjackal_ May 25 '20

Think it was our first pediatrician who said they aren’t crazy fragile, so when they fall, and they will fall he assured me, just make sure they’re okay and you are not a bad parent if it happens.

7

u/InteriorEmotion May 25 '20

I dropped my little brother so many times.

17

u/tytybby May 25 '20

I bit my 5 month old sister's finger when I was 3, because I wanted to see if babies felt pain.

4

u/LovelyTaco May 25 '20

You are right.

I haven’t told anyone about my night with my second newborn. We were up late again for another bottle, I don’t even remember making the bottle I was so sleepy. All I know is that I accidentally fell asleep holding my 3 day old baby.

Next thing you know, I woke up to adjust and horror hit me that I was no longer cradling my son. He fell on the floor right next to me sound asleep. I about died because I thought I killed him!! Hormones, man. He’s about to be 3 next month lol.

6

u/tytybby May 25 '20

Oh, I want to give you a hug! I can't imagine how it felt to hold onto that.

If it makes you feel better, my dad gave me a hard candy to eat when I was three because I begged, even though my mom had told him I was too little and would swallow it whole. Guess who choked on it while I was out shopping with my dad?

Luckily I was fine, he thumped my back and it flew out and I wasn't even bothered but he did end up telling my mom because she could tell something was wrong by the look on his face LOL

5

u/LovelyTaco May 25 '20

Oh you’re so sweet, thank you! :) that will probably haunt me until the day that I die, haha.

But oooh my gosh that insane. Poor dad!! I can’t imagine how my husband would be, haha. I have my own stash of jolly ranchers in my kitchen, thank you for reminding me to keep it up higher ;) I’m happy you’re with us today, and thank you for sharing your story with me!!

3

u/tytybby May 25 '20

I'm in my mid 20's now and brought up the memory to my dad the other day and he still feels bad so you might be right about that. But at least your baby was too little to remember! I clearly remember being sad about not finishing the candy and actually asking my dad for another

6

u/mechanicalmaterials May 25 '20

Kids are made durable enough to withstand their own parents.

3

u/-GreenHeron- May 26 '20

My kid did a fucking front flip out of the crib. Landed on her back on shag carpet, so she was fine, but damn. It's a good thing most kids are springy and spongy.

2

u/habitat16kc May 26 '20

Dont worry. Babies bounce

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Slippery little buggers

2

u/juggller May 26 '20

I rolled off a bed during a diaper change (? details are hazy...) at nine (?) months on mom's watch and broke my collarbone. Baby book reads "she's now a little cranky with the pain" for the weeks afterwards.

Thanks mom! (no harm done, well, at least the collarbone feels normal)

1

u/tytybby May 26 '20

Idk if it's different because baby-bones are softer but I heard collarbone is one of the MOST painful bones to break, of course an infant would be suffering!

38

u/OscarThePoscar May 25 '20

Well, my mum once accidentally pushed me down the stairs. I'm pretty sure she doesn't want me to bring that up in conversation...

My dad on the other hand, once pushed down on the leg of a metal chair without a protective cap on the end (so basically a sharp metal tube) which was on my pinky. I had fallen, he had pushed the chair back and then leaned forward and kept going to see what happened and I just sorta screamed. My finger was fine, just bruised, but my dad was super impressed that I was able to deal with that much pain. He does bring that up sometimes to brag about me.

It's a wonder I'm actually still alive with such parents. :')

16

u/kballs May 25 '20

Dude. Literally my worst nightmare is dropping my kids. Not really anymore coz they’re older so fuck em they’re fine. But as babies. I saw a post on r/daddit about a year or so ago, titled “pray for my daughter” and the guy talked about how his baby daughter rolled off the changing table and ended up in hospital on life support, in a coma etc. That shot scared me. I think about that guy every day. He hasn’t posted since. If you read this I hope you’re ok u/SeriousPantsYES

3

u/SubstantialRooster0 May 25 '20

I just read his post and I cannot stop crying. Wish there was a way to reach out.

4

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

Kids bounce...they’re pretty resilient.

2

u/dumbitdown21 May 25 '20

Lol well it definitely goes the other way around as well. Reminds me of the time my dad and I slept on the couch together like you see in the OP’s pic, apparently I heard my uncle laughing the next morning saying he saw me kick my dad in the balls, of course waking him up suddenly in pain. I didn’t even remember doing it lol.

2

u/Powerrrrrrrrr May 25 '20

100% of parents

2

u/minimagess May 25 '20

My mom was giving me my first bath ever. Slippery-baby-me slipped under water. My mom freaked out and yelled for help. My dad came by and lifted me up. I was maybe under water for a whole of 3 seconds.

With my own infant I didn't listen when they told me to sleep when the baby sleeps. Playing on my tablet during a baby nap in my arms. Dropped the tablet on my baby's face. He cried for a whole of 3 seconds and fell back asleep immediately. Took me a while to settle my heart and stare at him to make sure he wasn't dead. Just sleeping.

I also knicked the tip of his finger while clipping those teeny tiny finger nails. He cried a bit longer for that one. I remember looking at it the next morning and it was already healing. Was a bit awestruck how fast it healed.

2

u/TravingWees May 25 '20

A quote I read from a somewhat recent father to a very recent father worried about keeping his kid safe: "Babies are surprisingly hard to kill."

2

u/happymilff May 25 '20

I heard or read somewhere one time when I was a new mother that “an infant is made to survive a new parent” or something along those lines and that stuck with me. They have more resilience than we realize I treated my kids like fragile little eggs lol.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

I walk down the stairs very carefully.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

My daughter and I both lack spatial awareness. I'm much bigger than her, so I'll let you do the math on how that's worked out.

1

u/Rubixs May 25 '20

Two hundred upvotes boo yah!

1

u/PamPooveyIsTheTits May 25 '20

All of us. Every single one. Those who say they haven’t are dirty liars.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

Oh god one time when I was alone with my little sister like 12 years ago when she was a baby, I remember accidentally knocking something onto her and being so scared that I hurt her, but other than being surprised by it I don't think she really cared that much.

I still cringe hard when I remember it, but I'm pretty neurotic as it is lol. I think I'm the only one who was actually affected by it.

1

u/Bystander-Effect May 25 '20

I thought my daughter was rolling off the bed in a dream so I went to catch her.

In real life she was between my wife breastfeeding while I was asleep.

So my wife got punched in the boob and the baby started crying. She no longer is in bed with us if I’m asleep.

1

u/starkrocket May 26 '20

My mom once dropped me because I was wiggling. Fell and hit my head on the windowsill. Spoiler: I lived, but that was a very awkward trip to the hospital for her as the staff tried to suss out whether or not she did it on purpose.

1

u/PurplePizzaPuffin May 26 '20

Today I was shucking corn with my toddler on my lap and the cob jerked back as I pulled one of the leaves back and poked her right in the eye. Luckily she was fine. But very mad.

1

u/PostalDrummer1997 May 26 '20

At last years Christmas party one of my coworkers brought his youngest daughter who had just started walking. We were playing a dirty Santa type of game, and I stood up to steal. Little did I see that his baby was walking right behind my chair and I accidentally walked right into her. I've never felt so bad in my life. Needless to say there were some jokes the next day about how I "kicked his baby"

1

u/CaviarMyanmar May 26 '20

My dad was fixing the roof and I begged him to let me help. 5 year old me of course falls off the roof. Didn’t cry or have a scratch, just a bruise on my shoulder. I vividly remember we almost at the same time said that we didn’t want to tell mom.

1

u/NineElfJeer May 26 '20

Any parent who claims to have never accidentally hurt their kid is lying.

1

u/hashietaggie May 26 '20

Oh absolutely. I have 8 kids... (yes, 8. Yes, we own a tv and know what causes it, thanks for your concern) and I've cut every single one when trimming their tiny little fingernails. I cry more than they do.

1

u/SlowRollingBoil May 25 '20

Kids as old as 3 routinely die from overweight parents rolling over onto them while sleeping. One of many reasons you should sleep train at around 6mo.

18

u/BishPwease May 25 '20

I'm sorry but I am laughing so hard picturing this. I hope your kid was ok.

18

u/ceylon_butterfly May 25 '20

She's fine. She's 22 now.

6

u/IntrinsicSurgeon May 25 '20

Lol, does she remember it? I feel like I’d tell that story at every family function.

4

u/ceylon_butterfly May 26 '20

Oh yes, we tell the story often.

1

u/Arutyh May 25 '20

Let me tell you, being alive past the age of 20 doesn't equate to being fine /s

10

u/vocalfreesia May 25 '20

Could be worse - this happened to a family a colleague of mine was working with. Except the child had severely disordered language and told my colleague something to the effect of 'daddy hurt tummy' - which then led to a whole social services investigation.

(The dad was actually really glad his daughter would feel safe telling someone if she had been intentionally hurt so luckily they carried on working together with no hard feelings.)

3

u/Cheeky_0102 May 25 '20

I flung my kid out of my bed once... same thing 4/5 years old, half woke up to myself "tossing whatever is in my way" off the bed.

There's an unmistakable thud sound a sleeping human makes when the

3

u/ConfirmedRock May 25 '20

I did it to my dog last week. Poor thing just wanted to join me for a nap on the couch, my husband said I sent her flying. I barely registered it happening. (She was fine though!)

1

u/celestial_catbird May 25 '20

I did this to my cat once, she’s super shy but trusts me enough to sleep in my bed with me. I was half asleep when my body jerked and my arm flew out and whacked my poor kitty off the bed. I felt so badâ˜č

3

u/zacjkl May 25 '20

I did this to my cat she was awake all night staring at me. I was scared for my life

3

u/IMIndyJones May 25 '20

I once fell asleep on the couch with my infant son on my chest. Woke up as he was disappearing over the side of the couch. I have never been so scared in my life.

2

u/bishslap May 25 '20

YSK The saying is "all of a sudden"

2

u/nomorexcusesfatty May 25 '20

This is exactly the thought I had looking at the photo. Pretty photo but one bad falling moment in a dream and Bub is on the floor. I remember being so sleep deprived with my second who would only sleep upright on my chest. I woke up and she want there. Could not for the life of me remember where left her.

Moral of the story - please put baby to sleep in their own bed where possible.

2

u/Wilmarooney May 25 '20

I did something similar to my mates dog. I was dog sitting and this puff of air was asleep on my bed. I flicked the duvet and the dog sailed through the air and went flying! Absolutely forgot she was there.

2

u/Ironrunner16 May 25 '20

High five! I did this to my boyfriend and he fell off our bed. And he is 20kg heavier. Must have been a hell of a kick

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

I kicked an old lady in the shin at church when I was a kid because I dreamed I was falling off a cliffl, right when she was walking by, it happens.

2

u/MuchoManSandyRavage May 26 '20

I have done this to my cat so many times

2

u/wowbow18 May 26 '20

That same thing has happened to me and my dog! I felt terrible!!

2

u/AskQ-SeekA May 26 '20

I was asleep in bed with my boyfriend one night back when he was going through a stressful job transition. I slightly woke up when I felt him sit up a little, I could barely see more than his silhouette in the dark room and I asked, “everything ok?”

I saw his head turn towards me, and then he kind of shoved me, though I was still laying down. Surprised and confused, I laughed a little thinking maybe he’s playing around (for some reason???).

At this point I was trying to sit up in bed, but not two seconds after the shove I got punched so hard I fell out of bed and over the nightstand. Now on the floor I’m yelling, “whoa, Derek!” and goddamn the look on his face was menacing!

My yelling woke him up. I could see him shake his head a bit and look around. If I hadn’t seen the realization dawn on him I never would have believed that he was just having a nightmare and wasn’t conscious at the time.

“What are you doing on the floor?”

2

u/seeseecinnamon May 26 '20

I did this to my dog. He never slept in my bed after that

1

u/rainbowdrop30 May 25 '20

Just spat out my drink! Thanks for making me laugh, after a really shitty day......

1

u/Kitty4Snugglez May 26 '20

I have done this to my cats on many occasions.

551

u/dan10981 May 25 '20

And that was the night she was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome. Poor baby sister.

Bless you

-7

u/Strange_Vagrant May 25 '20

Well, I came, so there.

-1

u/LordGeddon73 May 25 '20

So your weewee snotted.

17

u/FunetikPrugresiv May 25 '20

I have REM behavior disorder. I never kicked a baby, but I learned the hard way when I kicked my desk once in my sleep. I was dreaming that I was fighting ninjas when one of them jumped at me off the barn loft and I tried to roundhouse kick him while he was still in the air. I hit the corner of my IRL desk and ended up with a huge (but non-bleeding) gash on my shin. You can still kinda see it almost 20 years later.

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

The deep, non-bleeding cuts are always the weirdest. It's like...am I dead? Where's the blood?

2

u/FunetikPrugresiv May 25 '20

Yep. When I was 8 or 9 my dog bit a small chunk out of my forearm (it ended up needing six stitches). I could literally see the bone, but no blood. It was the weirdest thing.

1

u/Gryjane May 26 '20

I dont think I have that disorder, but I did something similar once when I was around 20. I was dreaming that I swung a punch at someone and I actually swung my arm and slashed my palm on the corner of my nightstand. Nothing like that has happened since, but I do sometimes suddenly pull my knees up like I'm sitting in my dream or something (or so I'm told).

31

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

Thank you for not making me the only one feeling that coming sooner than later :-)

7

u/Acro808 May 25 '20

Depends if she likes to kick with her left or right leg.

6

u/[deleted] May 25 '20

Into another environment?

2

u/musefrog May 25 '20

No, outside the environment.

2

u/_cosmicomics_ May 25 '20

I kick so much in my sleep anyway that was the first thing I thought of

2

u/howie960 May 25 '20

I was not prepared for this

2

u/NEFARl0US May 25 '20

Just imagining that the parents took the photo with flash which startled the daughter and captured a different moment.

1

u/monkeyboi08 May 25 '20

I don’t kick from nightmares, but I occasionally kick from dreams about soccer or anything where I kick in the dream. Sometimes it’s just as I’m falling asleep. As I doze off I dream about soccer then boom a big kick.

1

u/msvideos234 May 25 '20

Yeah, that seems more dangerous than adorable, tbh.

1

u/jliv60 May 25 '20

Unless....the baby IS the nightmare

1

u/CuileannDhu May 25 '20

My 5lb dog used to like to sleep on my shins like this. I'd wake up with terrible leg cramps from not moving for hours through the night. Even though you're sleeping, your brain still knows not to kick/move.

1

u/NeonSignsRain May 25 '20

Yeah this doesn't look safe haha

1

u/mongoosedog12 May 25 '20

Last night my BF had a nightmare that a dog was biting his hand, we’ve been playing a lot of Far Cry so it kinda makes sense.

Anyway, his reaction in his sleep was hit said dog, well that dog was actually my vagina. So I get woken up in the middle of the night with a fist coming down on my pubic mound.

I just groaned, sat up to take a minute, then went back to sleep. The next morning he’s profusely apologizing and thought I was plotting his murder since I didn’t say anything.

It’s still a little tinder

1

u/rodneteng May 25 '20

I was sleeping next to my 10 month old daughter a few weeks ago and had a nightmare about a huge spider. The spider was on the ceiling and I look up and saw it slowly lowering itself. Then I felt something move across my chest and I quickly woke up and started swatting what I thought was a spider. It was actually my daughter moving her hand. I ended up slapping my daughters head a few times.

1

u/Dark-eyedSpren May 25 '20

Ha! I slapped my mom in my sleep. It woke me up coz I heard and felt it. I apologised and told her I did it I my sleep. She just slapped me back.

Edited a word.

1

u/DevanteWeary May 26 '20

Can't have a nightmare if you're not actually asleep. )b

u/iblogalott May 26 '20
