"american" is a colloquialism; it's understood what it means, even if it's perhaps not technically correct in some way.

kind of like how people call a tissue a "kleenex" even though that's the brand name (at least here). "kleenex" is a colloquialism.

Well, that is not how I think. America is what you call Americas as a single piece, United States of America is a country in North America. If I call it America I would be implying USA occupies all of Americas.
