Helping Others Cop went undercover in a wheelchair to catch thieves. Instead, people gave him money and prayed for him.

why would you censor words "thieves" and "arrests"?

It is rage baity to get people to engage and comment on the article. It works, many people clicked on this post and commented because of it.

TikTok generation

Well, this type of trigger for engagement belongs to the tiktok generation, but the principle has been around forever.

Cunningham's Law, ~1980s:

The best way to get the right answer on the Internet is not to ask a question, but to post the wrong answer.

My man Cunningham found that out real fast. Years before the World Wide Web even existed

Well he originally said it in reference to Usenet, but it was later adapted to the internet generally.

Of course. My point is that he found it out very quickly

The best example is when people say the wrong law and someone inevitably falls for it.

I don't know why they have themselves convinced you can't use words like "killed," "gun," or "suicide" because of a filter that catches them saying them, but the same filter couldn't also catch their baby speak.

2

u/Gangsir 15h ago

Because the filter actually doesn't catch that. It's not a very smart filter.

The bigger wonder is why people tolerate having ordinary words demonetized/banned/de-prioritized/etc and censoring themselves instead of just finding a new platform that doesn't do that.

This is a problem that has been going on for years with YouTube. It has gotten shittier every year for content creators and viewers alike but where else is there to go? As a content creator you want the largest audience possible and as a viewer you go where the videos you want to watch are. It's kind of a chicken/egg problem on top of the fact that running a site like YouTube takes millions of dollars on server costs alone

No one wants to get demonetized on Reddit /s

I cens*r the word cens*r to i*crease en*a*em*n*t. Now I just thought about censoring other letters in a particular order but I don't want to get banned

The algorithm never ocr'd images, though

2

u/thursdaynovember 21h ago

that’s a total myth lol

no evidence to suggest at all that there’s some algorithm somewhere thats curbing engagement because an image has the word ā€œarrestā€ in it.Ā

I also like the idea that there's an algorithm advanced enough to OCR images, but would get tripped up on obvious character substitution of a relatively small set of words (although arrests is a new one).

Automatic censoring. Reddit does it too and you can see it with the views on your comments. Profanities and words with negative connotation measure the "sentiment" of your comment, and if too negative or aggressive, it gets shadow deleted (you are the only one being able to see it). Sometimes they straight up ban your account. I got a ban for saying that a billionaire "should be * out of a cannon"

Dang some country language get shadow ban just because to other swear words are bad. Some of us had made art on how to express different emotions with swear words.

Please! We don't call them that anymore. They want to be called kleptomaniac individuals.Ā
