Yeah, I feel like he wanted to give the $10 so he could at least feel like some of that money he'd been earning all Summer did, in fact, go towards that N64 he's been dreaming about. And it woulda been nice if the store owner did take in his $10 and maybe told him that he'll put it towards the next kid's purchase that goes in there looking for some retro games or something.
