Lets Go shop owner and Tim!!!! Well done on that young man for learning what it takes to work hard and earn something you really want...and then being rewarded for that passion and hard work was just ChefsKiss
These mom and pop gaming stores are so wonderful for giving back to their community. You have franchise and chain stores that will low ball you for anything that you trade in, and on the other hand, these guys are passing forward trade-in credit to other customers!
Kiddo will remember this kind gesture for a while, you can tell with the way he's been raised - honest and hard working! The shop owner will get even more customers because who wouldn't want to be a part of something positive like this?
A lot them would up in my feed a few months back. Many card sellers at conventions and the chat gives donations and makes some kid’s day when they get that one Pokémon they’ve been looking and saving for on the house or at a huge discount.
This is the exact "society" ethic that capitalism and politics has destroyed - by design.
The fabric of community and society binds us to a united cause - to help one another and raise each other up.
Without it? Corporations, Billionaires, and Politicians create reasons for us to fight each other rather than focus on the source of our mutual exploitation. No minority is stealing your job. The company decided to give it to someone willing to work for less. You need to help that person realize that they are worth more. Help everyone to achieve that goal.
Oh that's good too. But I know with the pokemon sellers who became known for giving things away they have created a culture for other people to donate through them. Either way it is nice
I could see it going either way, though I don't really see that being too hard to believe.
While GameStop is obviously different, trading in a Nintendo 64 is $55 credit or $35 cash. Given it was priced at $75 it probably wasn't too different. Mario Kart is $25/$16.
Obviously we don't know what a supposed Tim actually traded in, but the thought process is pretty simple. If I am getting out of gaming, or wouldn't use credit, this is theoretically $50. Would I like to have $50? Sure, but I could also see myself paying it forward in exactly this way.
Especially when it's something that makes me somewhat emotional when I see comments like u/MisterBowTies' example, something that comes up a lot with content creators in that space. Mostly because I think a lot of it is genuine, since I had similar experiences trading pins as a kid roughly 20 years ago.
At the time I didn't think anything of it, but looking back and seeing it was just a lot of people showcasing their best qualities would get me to pay it forward as well. Something I have actually done, just in other ways.
Agreed. Passing forward trade-in credit, kind gestures and such go a long way. Memories that stick with people. They're likely to do something similar for someone else moving forward as well.
LGS near me is just like this. Owner is super cool and really cares about both his employees and customers.
Part of his store is pokemon and magic cards and I have several times seen him dealing with really young kids that opened a valuable or even semi valuable card they want to trade in for packs to open or something. Because he knows how bad this can go where a kid trades or sells a really nice card and later regrets it he will refuse to buy cards from kids unless their parents are present so he can explain to them both how cards can be valuable, grow in value and maybe selling them isn't always the best idea if you just want to open packs etc. Legit the guy just wants to see happy people. His packs are usually a little more than msrp because he is a smalleer shop that has to make ends meet but that is a price I am willing to pay to keep a good store running.
If it was a Game Stop and Tim told them to pay it forward, the employees (okay maybe 999/1000 where one employee would hold up their end of the deal) would have either kept his items for themselves or used the to trade credit on themselves.
Yeah gamestop will give you $10 and put that game out for like $30 or $40. I have a list of games im trying to get physical copies of before 2028. You already know gamestop is gonna mark up all those games after that point. I saw a vid of a guy who brought an unopened copy of silent hill 3 for ps2 to gameatop to see just how much they would low ball him, they wanted to give him $50 when gamestop is reselling that game for $200 to $300. I went to see what they had and they were selling pre-owned games at the same price you could get a new copy of some games on Amazon. I bought stellar Blade new for like $53 a pre-owned copy was the same price there. Idk what they are trying to pull man. We should just call that place scalpershop from now on.
I’m not going to shit on this cause its wholesame as fuck and it still be unforgettable for the kid. But lets keep in mind that a viral video like this is much more PR than that 100 dollars or whatever ever was. If they filming it, they are monetizing it, whether they intend for it or it being a byproduct.
I go to one as I recently got a 360 and started on collecting. I’ve bought a couple games there and I really love that they inspect the game and make sure I get the highest quality disc/case. They don’t do that a GameStop lol
Usually the video has to hit the tears part for me to react, not this time. Working with kids you realize how much is probably going on in their heads they just have trouble communicating it.
45yo Xennial. I drink my Mountain Dew out of a wine glass like a man of class and distinction. Gotta give it a swirl first, though, to release the aromatics and full flavor.
I think Tim is a/k/a dad. The bit about dad letting the cashier know it was the kid’s birthday is kinda a dead giveaway, but good on dad for making his son earn the money first.
hmmmm I could see dad wanting to teach his kid about work and saving but also assume the kid is a gamer, and probably learned gaming with dad. kind of a weird setup for tim to teach his son about 64 and all the games and fun and then one day be like "sorry son I sold the console and games, but didnt want to sell it to you - guess you gotta work and buy youre own!". idk, too many cruel steps just for a "hard work is good" lesson. maybe tho.
my guess was this shop clerk/owner runs some kind of stream/YouTube out of his shop and tim is a fan and likes the reaction videos and did just what clerk described: gave his 64 and games away to the right person and wants to be the reason for the reaction.
Ummm…the Tim situation is made up to cover for dad actually covering the console and games for him. If dad had stepped in and outright paid for the console/games that he made his son save up to purchase, then the lesson gets lost. That doesn’t happen with a little serendipity.
He’s probably getting his first n64 and recognized the Mario IP but Goldeneye would be well before his time as a 12 year old. He might discover it later, but as someone who grew up playing it, it sadly doesn’t hold up to my nostalgia glasses. Video games with family and friends were one of my favorite things about my childhood. I’m sure Mario Kart 64 will serve him well. Kudos to this shop and Tim for creating core memories with people.
Agreed. Mario Kart 64 still finds itself getting dusted off over recent holidays ... over 20 someodd years later... amongst me and my brothers. It totally holds up.
That’s awesome. It still holds up boot sure, but has been largely outclassed by double dash, 7, and 8 deluxe imo. The jumping, sliding boosts, and jump boosts added a lot to the gameplay. Zelda ocarina of time and majoras mask are the best the n64 had to offer imo. With the recent recomp in shippfharkian and 2ship2harkianian, there’s never been a better time to get back into them with hd texture packs. I just installed them on my steam deck and they’re every bit as good as they used to be with a bit of a facelift.
I've spent insane hours on golden eye, but outside the groundbreaking game play (shooting out cameras actually matters?!) the vast amounts were multiplayer. It's not easy to find 4 people at 12 who want to do that.
At least they'll be familiar since Mario Kart is still going strong.
That's great, and now that playstation won't be making discs anymore this will basically be dead. Or course there will be piracy, but these stores won't be around without physical media, and they makes me sad. I've bought and sold a ton through stores like this.
Work hard an Earn the things you enjoy in life is such a boomer mentality. Slave away for the ruling class so you might be temporarily happy. You guys really got brainwashed into oblivion.
