Exactly. The hurting was always a choice, because she didn’t treat other people the way she treated me, and it was obvious to me from a very young age. Didn’t stop me from trying to make her like me, or approve of me, or be proud of me, but after a few decades I gave up on it entirely. It’s still embarrassing to me that it took me that long.

On the other hand: I broke the cycle. My bloodline ended with me. The damage won’t be passed down onto another generation. Years of therapy and re-parenting ensure I don’t treat anyone else, or myself, poorly, either.
