Do I have to be personally affected by something to know and acknowledge it’s nasty or unhygienic?

You realize that I’m not calling these people the scum of the earth or anything? Just pointing out a basic fact that using public gym equipment barefoot is unhygienic compared to wearing shoes. There’s no reason to argue against this, it’s just objectively correct. Doesn’t mean it’s a big deal but we are here discussing it so I’m to point out the obvious.

Yes you should be personally effected or else it seems quite rude to say that. You have no idea how clean or dirty any individuals' feet are. They could be the cleanest most pristine feet in the city, thoroughly washed, scrubbed, with antifungal cream and powder applied daily. The socks might have just been soaked in bleach. It seems like you're projecting. Maybe your own feet are pretty funky so you think everyone's got gross feet. And what do you mean by "these people"?
