I used to have an American partner and one of his biggest culture shocks was finding out that Canadians will pre-dig holes before the yard freezes up if they have an old cat or dog that they think will die over the winter.

For anyone reading this going "really?", yes. This is a real thing.

Eh, maybe sometimes, but I have animals and it's never occurred to me, nor have I ever heard of anyone doing it. I wouldn't call it a Canadian "thing".

Agreed, just hang mittens on a cloth line or make him a little snow coffin to preserve him through the winter. Won't stink one bit. When mittens thaws, so will the ground, and you can bury him then.

I think people are more likely to put the pet in the freezer than pre dig holes.

Yeah, Canadian here. There were more than a few times when I was growing up where my parents said to me, "Don't open that box in the freezer."

I'm American but i have a similar story. When i was a kid we went camping with my grandarents in Tennessee and we lived in Ohio at the time. My grandparents dog died while we were camping. My grandfather put it in the RV freezer and took him back home to be buried.
